The Brooklyn Nets selected Mikel Brown Jr. with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft on Wednesday night, adding one of the most talented guards in this year's class to their growing young core.

Brown, a 6-foot-5 guard out of Louisville, enters the NBA after a standout freshman season in which he averaged 18.2 points and 4.7 assists per game. Despite missing time due to a back injury, he earned All-ACC honors, was named to the ACC All-Rookie Team, and established himself as one of the premier offensive players in college basketball.

One of Brown's most memorable performances came against NC State, when he scored 45 points to set both Louisville and ACC freshman scoring records. Throughout the season, he showcased an ability to score from all three levels while also creating opportunities for teammates, helping solidify his status as a lottery prospect.

The selection adds another promising young player to Brooklyn's rebuilding roster. Brown joins a group that includes Egor Demin, Ben Saraf, Nolan Traore, Drake Powell, Danny Wolf, and Noah Clowney as the Nets continue building toward the future.

Featured stories

Brown was frequently linked to Brooklyn throughout the pre-draft process, with multiple reports suggesting the Nets had significant interest in the Louisville standout. As the draft approached, he increasingly emerged as a popular projection for Brooklyn at No. 6.

For a Nets team still searching for long-term answers in the backcourt, Brown brings an intriguing combination of size, shot-making ability, and playmaking upside. He is comfortable operating both on and off the ball, possesses deep shooting range, and has shown the ability to create offense in pick-and-roll situations.

His offensive skill set is a major reason many evaluators viewed him as one of the highest-upside guards in the draft. When attacking downhill, Brown consistently puts pressure on defenses and creates opportunities for both himself and his teammates.

Like most young prospects, Brown enters the NBA with areas of his game that will need further development. Improving his consistency as a decision-maker and defender will be important as he adjusts to the professional level, but his offensive talent has never been in question.

The fit also aligns with Brooklyn's current timeline. The Nets remain focused on building a sustainable foundation through young talent, and Brown gives the organization another player with significant long-term potential.

There are never guarantees in the NBA Draft, but Brooklyn is betting that Brown's combination of scoring ability, playmaking, and overall upside can make him an important piece of the franchise's future.

Now officially a member of the Nets, Brown becomes the latest addition to one of the league's youngest rebuilding rosters and will have an opportunity to help shape Brooklyn's next era.
