The Brooklyn Nets have remained patient in their mid-season dealings leading up to the Feb. 5 trade deadline, but a potential opportunity to add a young building block was passed on by the rebuilding franchise on Wednesday night.
After the Nets' interest in the Golden State Warriors' uber-athletic forward Jonathan Kuminga remained high for the first portion of the season, Golden State decided to ultimately deal the 23-year-old and Buddy Hield to the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for 2024 NBA champion and 2018 All-Star Kristaps Porzingis, ending a months-long saga between the dynastic franchise and their former No. 7 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft.
Instead of recruiting the Nets' star scoring wing Michael Porter Jr. to assist Stephen Curry on his quest for a fifth NBA title, the Warriors went with Porzingis and rid themselves of their most valued asset in the process, leaving the Nets with one less option to help lead the team forward into a new era.
In 20 appearances for the Warriors this season, Kuminga contributed 12.1 points and 5.9 rebounds on a 49.7% effective field goal percentage, and now he's headed to a quickly rising Hawks group headlined by first-time All-Star Jalen Johnson.
Now, the Nets have been thrust into an awkward position, as one of the more obvious targets in an eventual Porter Jr. trade has been collected by a fellow Eastern Conference franchise looking to soar through the standings to close the year.
Though this could be viewed as an unfortunate situation, the Nets might be more comfortable than ever with keeping Porter Jr. around past the deadline and into the offseason, especially considering that the team will still require at least one star-level talent to keep fans interested throughout the course of the season.
Porter Jr.'s incredible 2025-26 campaign and debut season with Brooklyn has continued to this juncture, as he's averaged 25.5 points, 7.3 rebounds and 3.2 assists while knocking down 38.9% of his 9.6 attempts from three-point range, proving once again to be one of the best pure shot-makers in all of the NBA.
The ex-Denver Nuggets star and 2023 NBA champion will be tasked with keeping the Nets faithful entertained if a trade with a contender falls through, and it's hard to believe that many other conversations will be ignited by the deadline.
If anything, it's possible that a team looking to add one more piece to take them over the top, like the Detroit Pistons, could be interested. Unfortunately, the writing is on the wall for a season-long stay with the Nets for Porter Jr. this season.
