Nets May Not Get Desired Trade Offers for Porter Jr.

As contract negotiations stall over a $40 million asking price, Brooklyn faces a dwindling market for their sharpshooter, risking a low-value return for the high-scoring forward.

The Michael Porter Jr. trade saga has bled into the regular season, and the longer it drags on, the less likely the Brooklyn Nets are to get the assets they want.

Porter and Brooklyn have been negotiating a contract extension since July 6. They haven't reached a middle ground, as the 28-year-old is reportedly seeking $40 million annually in a new extension.

A three-month, almost four-month impasse has resparked trade rumors surrounding the 6-foot-10 sharpshooter. NBA insider Sean Deveney reported Brooklyn may get one protected first-round pick since whoever trades for him will have to extend him.

Trade suitors are often against acquiring a player who could be a two-month rental after the trade deadline. Luke Kennard and Dorian Finney-Smith for the Los Angeles Lakers are examples in back-to-back seasons.

Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka sent three second-round picks to Brooklyn for Finney-Smith in December 2024, and he left in the offseason to sign with the Houston Rockets. He sent a 2032 second-rounder for Kennard at February's deadline, and he signed with the Phoenix Suns this offseason.

That's a valid concern for teams who want to add a knockdown 3-point shooter.

Porter's desired salary range could be another obstacle. He's coming off a career year averaging 24.2 points on 36.3% from three and 7.1 rebounds.

Coach Jordi Fernández empowered him to grow as a shot creator. The 6-foot-10 forward used simple and effective dribble moves to create space for his pull-up jumpers.

His go-to move was a between-the-legs dribble into a crossover, and defenders couldn't contest his jumper because of his high release point.

Paying Porter nearly 25% of the league's cap is a hefty investment for Brooklyn and other teams. That's close to a max contract, and he's not a franchise-altering superstar like his former teammate Nikola Jokić.

The New York Knicks are paying OG Anunoby over $40 million over the next three seasons. Porter's career high surpasses Anunoby's personal best of 17.1 points; they both are high-volume, efficient 3-point shooters, but Anunoby is a better wing defender.

New York is paying the 29-year-old two-way wing like a star, and Porter is likely basing his value on his previous contract and Anunoby's.

Porter has been key in keeping the Nets close in the fourth quarter against playoff teams. He scored 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds in the team's first win against the Indiana Pacers last Sunday.

Brooklyn must find a trade partner or middle ground in extension negotiations to clear the Porter saga once and for all.
