Brooklyn’s sharpshooter outpaced Jayson Tatum to lead the league in scoring this fall, showcasing a lethal offensive evolution alongside new playmaker Julius Randle ahead of a high-stakes season.

Michael Porter Jr. is picking up where he left off last season, finishing the preseason as the top scorer.

Porter averaged 21.7 points in three games for the Brooklyn Nets. He bested Boston Celtics superstar Jayson Tatum, who averaged 0.7 fewer points in two games.

His highest-scoring game came in Brooklyn’s preseason finale against the Miami Heat on Wednesday. The 6-foot-10 forward scored 27 points on 9-for-17 shooting (4-for-8 from three).

Brooklyn’s sharpshooter is coming off a career year, averaging 24.2 points as the No. 1 option. Coach Jordi Fernández empowered the 28-year-old to challenge himself as a shot creator.

Porter shot more off-the-dribble threes and mid-range jumpers than he did with the Denver Nuggets. His efficiency dipped, as he took more difficult shots, but he still shot above league average.

He may not have another career season with Julius Randle addition in the offseason, but he’s slotted into a role he’s thrived in and won a championship in.

Randle is an experienced primary playmaker. He’s averaged over five assists in four of his last six seasons.

The 12-year veteran believed he would make a strong duo with his sharpshooter, and the preseason proved him right.

Randle completed a flashy wraparound pass to Porter in transition and knocked down a fast-break three in Brooklyn’s 124-90 win over the Charlotte Hornets.

Porter’s ability to space the floor regardless of the contest is a coveted skill. He’s a key part of the Nets’ success this season, and he believes the team can win 50 games.

Winning 50 games in a stronger Eastern Conference is a tall task. Kawhi Leonard and LeBron James rejoined the Eastern Conference after eight years on the West Coast.

Aiming for a play-in appearance is more realistic. Brooklyn has the talent to exceed the low expectations set for the team; Porter and Randle are the foundation of that success.

Porter's future with the franchise is in limbo as the Nets head into next Tuesday's opener against the Hornets. The two parties have not agreed to a contract extension, one he's. been eligible for since July 6.

Contract years tend to give players an extra chip on their shoulder, and it's no different for Porter. He's motivated to help the team win games and is even willing to sacrifice personal stats for his teammates.

The 28-year-old chased a personal accolade, hoping to make his first All-Star Game last season. He didn't make it, and it impacted his motivation to work out as the team wasn't winning.

Porter's mindset has changed, and a strong preseason shows Brooklyn the potential to maintain a high level while performing alongside another proven veteran in Randle.
