As LeBron James weighs a monumental return to the Eastern Conference, Brooklyn remains focused on a long-term rebuild fueled by recent draft picks and a potential blockbuster trade.
LeBron James' tenure with the Los Angeles Lakers has come to an end after eight years with the franchise, and his next chapter will take place on another team.
The Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat and Golden State Warriors are among the popular destinations for the NBA's all-time leading scorer. He either joins one of his former teams or teams up with Stephen Curry.
His decision in free agency will become the most discussed topic across the NBA world. However, his decision doesn’t impact the Brooklyn Nets.
He faced the Nets twice a year while playing for the Lakers, and it wouldn't change if he signed with the Cavaliers or Heat. Miami is in the Southeast Division and Cleveland is in the Central Division, which also sees Brooklyn twice a year.
Brooklyn isn't close to becoming a championship-contending team either. The team is building toward playoff contention with recent draft picks and trade acquisitions.
General manager Sean Marks drafted guard Mikel Brown Jr. sixth overall, forwards Joshua Jefferson 28th overall and Tyler Bilodeau 43rd overall. He acquired Julius Randle from the Minnesota Timberwolves in a three-team trade with the Chicago Bulls that sent center Nicolas Claxton to the Bulls.
James has dominated the Nets in the past five years. He's averaged 29.1 points, 7.1 rebounds and 6.6 assists across seven games. One of his most memorable games at the Barclays Center happened in 2024.
He scored 40 points, grabbed seven rebounds and had five assists. Brooklyn lost 116-104 but had a terrible start. The team lost the first quarter by 20 points (31-11).
While James could rejoin the Eastern Conference, his presence doesn't affect the Nets' future plans. They upgraded their floor with Brown Jr. and Randle joining the team — and have the picks to continue adding talent.
Michael Scotto of HoopsHype reported that Brooklyn is interested in trading for Boston Celtics guard Jaylen Brown. The Celtics star almost became a Net in 2023 when Kevin Durant requested a trade, but he was dealt to the Phoenix Suns.
Acquiring Brown would mean the team trades Michael Porter Jr., young talent and multiple first-round picks. Scotto highlighted that center Day'Ron Sharpe could be part of the deal, as Boston is interested in his services.
However, he signed a two-year, $20 million contract to remain in Brooklyn. With Claxton in the Central Division with Chicago, the Nets do not have a starting center, and Sharpe is going to step up in that role.
The Nets have quietly had one of the better offseasons before free agency has begun. They acquired talented players and still have the cap space to make more moves.
Brooklyn isn't in the sweepstakes to acquire the soon-to-be 24-year veteran, and it shouldn't move assets in an attempt to pursue James. Whether he remains in the Western Conference or rejoins the Eastern Conference holds no significance to the Nets' present or future.
