Anthony Davis' injury propels Dallas into tank mode, directly threatening Brooklyn's pursuit of a coveted top draft pick in a loaded 2026 class.

After falling to the Los Angeles Clippers by a score of 121-105 on Friday night, the Brooklyn Nets were once again reminded that the brunt of their 'wins' in the 2025-26 season won't show up in the stat sheet, but will come in the form of player development and silver linings.

Though it might appear as though the Nets have nothing to compete for this season, the rebuilding franchise will actually be thrust into one of the most important competitions they've entered in recent history prior to the 2026 NBA Draft Lottery.

The Nets currently have a fantastic chance to attain a top-3 pick in what is being touted as one of the most stacked draft classes in recent memory, but, of course, their odds of landing a pick in that range could be faced with an unforeseen challenge from an intriguing Western Conference group.

Reports of Dallas Mavericks star Anthony Davis suffering a brutal hand injury did not only throw a wrench into the Mavs' trade deadline plans, but it could also present a massive problem for a Nets team trying desperately to land a franchise-altering talent in this upcoming draft.

With the news of Davis' injury, the Mavericks could be prepared to enter full-on tank mode, and a new update from ClutchPoints' Erik Slater has reminded Nets fans that Dallas is creeping up on Brooklyn in the loss category.

"The Mavs are one game behind the Nets in the draft lottery standings," Slater shared via X on Friday evening.

"This Davis injury makes Dallas a real threat to jump Brooklyn," Slater continued.

"We’ll see how much urgency the Nets show as the season progresses."

This urgency that Slater is referencing could force the Nets to accelerate trade discussions to enter their own version of a full-on tank, possibly leading to a deal involving one of their top pieces such as Michael Porter Jr. or Nic Claxton sooner rather than later.

Dallas was holding onto whatever little hope they had remaining that if Davis were to remain healthy, Kyrie Irving were to return and Cooper Flagg were to prove he can contribute to a winner as a rookie that they'd be able to compete this season. Now, Davis potentially being sidelined for months could see the Mavericks also begin to coordinate their own trade dealings rather quickly.

Both franchises know what's at stake heading into this draft, and a combined mission to lose more than ever in hopes that either team will land Kansas' Darryn Peterson, Duke's Cameron Boozer or BYU's A.J. Dybantsa might be initiated shortly.
