The Nets don’t need every move to be a star signing. These three high-level role players could help stabilize Brooklyn’s roster, add versatility, and strengthen the rebuild without sacrificing long-term flexibility.
Not every successful offseason is defined by a blockbuster signing.
While much of the attention surrounding the Brooklyn Nets' cap space has focused on potential star-level additions, building a competitive roster requires more than just finding the next franchise cornerstone. Every winning team needs reliable role players who can defend, shoot, and contribute without demanding the ball.
After looking at high-upside swing targets in a previous piece, the Nets also have another important tier to consider: high-level role players.
As Brooklyn continues its rebuild, adding the right complementary pieces could be just as important as landing a headline-grabbing name. Three players who fit that description are Quentin Grimes, Ayo Dosunmu, and Keon Ellis.
Quentin Grimes is entering an important offseason in Philadelphia after re-signing with the team last summer on an $8.7 million qualifying offer, a decision that positioned him for a much larger payday this time around. He is now expected to be in line for a significant pay raise this offseason and is unlikely to consider a similar short-term structure again.
Still just 26 years old, Grimes has established himself as the type of player every team wants in its rotation. He can defend multiple positions, space the floor, and make an impact without needing a high-volume offensive role. For a Nets team that is still developing its young core, having players who can contribute without taking possessions away from others is valuable.
Grimes is also entering the prime years of his career. While he may never become an All-Star, his skill set fits almost any roster construction. Depending on the market, a deal in the range of $15 million to $20 million annually could make sense for both sides.
Ayo Dosunmu was dealt from Chicago to Minnesota at the trade deadline and quickly settled into a more stable role with the Timberwolves. His performance there was strong enough that bringing him back has already become something of a priority for Minnesota heading into the offseason.
At 26 years old, he combines athleticism, toughness, and versatility in the backcourt. He can handle the ball when needed, attack the basket, and defend opposing guards at a high level.
What makes Dosunmu particularly appealing is his ability to impact games in multiple ways. He does not need plays designed for him to be effective, which is exactly the type of player rebuilding teams should be targeting. If he were to reach the market, a contract in the range of $18 million to $22 million annually would not be surprising.
Keon Ellis was traded from Sacramento to Cleveland at the deadline but struggled to carve out a consistent role in a crowded backcourt and wing rotation. That situation could make him one of the more realistic candidates to explore a new home this offseason.
At just 26 years old, he has quietly developed into one of the better perimeter defensive guards in the league despite receiving far less national attention than many of his peers. His ability to pressure ball handlers, generate turnovers, and disrupt opposing offenses would immediately strengthen Brooklyn's defense.
Unlike some role players who contribute in only one area, Ellis has continued to improve offensively as well. That combination should make him an attractive target for any team looking to add depth and defensive versatility. A deal somewhere between $8 million and $12 million annually feels like a reasonable projection if he becomes available.
None of these players would generate the same headlines as a major star signing. That is exactly the point.
Championship-caliber rosters are built with more than stars. They are built with players who understand their roles, contribute consistently, and elevate the talent around them. Grimes, Dosunmu, and Ellis may not dominate offseason conversations, but all three could help Brooklyn build a stronger and more complete roster moving forward.
