Bleacher Report believes the Nets' two first-round picks are headed for vastly different rookie seasons. One is projected to start on opening night, while the other could follow a developmental path that has already paid off for Brooklyn's recent young talent.
The Brooklyn Nets entered the 2026 NBA Draft with two first-round selections, using the No. 6 overall pick on point guard Mikel Brown Jr. before trading back into the first round to select versatile forward Joshua Jefferson at No. 28.
While both players are viewed as important pieces of Brooklyn's future, Bleacher Report's Jonathan Wasserman believes they'll begin their NBA careers in very different situations.
In his recent predictions for every first-round pick's rookie role, Wasserman projects Brown as an opening-night starter while forecasting Jefferson to begin the season in the G League.
For Brown, that projection isn't particularly surprising.
The Nets drafted the former Louisville guard with the expectation that he'd compete for the starting point guard job, and everything he showed during Summer League only strengthened that case. Brown flashed the scoring ability that made him the sixth overall pick, but he also showed he's more than capable of running an offense, averaging 4.7 assists while consistently creating looks for teammates.
Wasserman believes Brown's offensive role may look a little different than it did in college.
With Julius Randle and Michael Porter Jr. expected to be Brooklyn's primary scoring options and Egor Demin looking ready for a breakout sophomore season, Brown likely won't have the same offensive workload he carried at Louisville. Instead, he could spend more time facilitating the offense while taking advantage of scoring opportunities when they come.
That could end up being the best situation for him. Brown occasionally tried to do too much offensively in college, forcing difficult shots or passes. Playing alongside established veterans should allow him to settle in, make the simple play and let the game come to him.
Of course, the starting point guard job won't be guaranteed.
Brooklyn has plenty of young talent in the backcourt, with 2025 first-round picks Nolan Traoré and Ben Saraf both capable of handling lead guard duties after impressive rookie campaigns. Brown may enter training camp as the favorite, but he'll still have to earn and keep the job.
Jefferson's path to consistent minutes appears much more difficult.
Bleacher Report projects the former Iowa State forward to spend time with the Long Island Nets, and given Brooklyn's current frontcourt, it's a realistic prediction. After adding Randle this offseason while continuing to develop Noah Clowney, Jefferson projects as the third power forward on the depth chart entering training camp.
That wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing.
The Nets took a similar approach with several young players last season. Danny Wolf, Ben Saraf and Nolan Traoré all spent time in Long Island early in the year, getting consistent reps they weren't going to receive in Brooklyn. When each eventually returned to the NBA roster, they looked noticeably more comfortable and prepared for the opportunity.
Jefferson could be next.
Rather than spending most nights out of the rotation, regular G League minutes would allow him to continue developing his versatile offensive game while working on the biggest swing skill in his development: his three-point shot. If that part of his game comes along, his ability to defend multiple positions, rebound, and facilitate could help him earn a larger role as the season progresses.
The two first-round picks may begin their rookie seasons on different paths, but both appear to fit into Brooklyn's long-term plans. Brown has a chance to make an immediate impact as the Nets' starting point guard, while Jefferson may simply need a little more development time before carving out his role at the NBA level.
