Brook Lopez could have one more chapter left in Brooklyn. As the Nets build toward a new era, a reunion with their all-time leading scorer could give the veteran center a chance to finish his career where it all began.
Brook Lopez has already cemented his place in Brooklyn Nets history.
But with the veteran center nearing the end of his NBA career, could he eventually make his way back to the organization that drafted him?
The idea of a Lopez reunion in Brooklyn was recently floated by Sports Illustrated's Ivan White, who suggested the Nets could make sense as a potential destination if Lopez becomes available from the Los Angeles Clippers.
There is nothing to suggest a reunion is imminent, but it is an interesting possibility to keep in mind as the Nets continue building their young roster.
Lopez is currently playing out the final year of his contract with the Clippers after Los Angeles picked up his $9.2 million team option for the 2026-27 season. He is 38 years old and entering his 19th NBA season, meaning any potential return to Brooklyn would likely come near the very end of his career.
That is what makes the idea of bringing him back so interesting.
Lopez was selected by the Nets with the 10th overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft and spent the first nine seasons of his career with the franchise. He became one of the faces of the team during its transition from New Jersey to Brooklyn and eventually established himself as one of the most important players in franchise history.
He remains the Nets' all-time leading scorer, finishing his Brooklyn career with 10,444 points. He also holds the franchise record for blocked shots and is one of the most accomplished players to ever play for the organization.
Lopez's departure in 2017 was also a major turning point for the Nets. Brooklyn traded him to the Los Angeles Lakers in the deal that brought D'Angelo Russell to the Nets, ending his nine-year run with the franchise.
Nearly a decade later, the Nets are in a completely different place.
If Lopez were to return, he obviously would not be coming back to be the centerpiece of the team. At 38, he would be a veteran role player who could provide shooting, size, and experience while giving a young roster another experienced voice in the locker room.
Lopez can still contribute, too. He averaged 8.5 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.3 assists during the 2025-26 season while shooting 36 percent from three-point range.
His game has also changed considerably since his first stint with the Nets. The big man who once did most of his work around the basket developed into a legitimate three-point shooter during his time with the Milwaukee Bucks while remaining a strong rim protector.
That skill set could still be useful for Brooklyn.
The Nets already have Day'Ron Sharpe and Moritz Wagner in the frontcourt, but Lopez would give the team a different type of center. His ability to stretch the floor could open up space for Brooklyn's younger players, while his experience could be valuable during a season where the Nets are hoping to take another step forward.
There is also the personal side of it.
Lopez will eventually have to decide how he wants the final chapter of his career to look. By the end of the 2026-27 season, he will be 39 years old and a free agent. If he decides to continue playing, returning to the organization that drafted him would give him an opportunity to finish his career in a familiar place.
It would bring Lopez back to Brooklyn, where he spent the first nine seasons of his career, made an All-Star team, and became the franchise's all-time leading scorer.
Of course, plenty would have to line up for it to happen. The Nets would have to determine whether they need another veteran center, while Lopez would have to decide whether Brooklyn is the right place for him at that point in his career.
His age and role would also have to be considered.
But if the Nets are competing for a playoff spot and Lopez is still capable of giving them productive minutes, a reunion would at least be worth discussing.
It would not be the same Brook Lopez who left Brooklyn in 2017. He would be an older player at a completely different point in his career.
And maybe that would be the point.
Lopez does not need to return to Brooklyn to prove anything. He has already done more than enough to establish himself as one of the best players in Nets history.
A return would simply give one of the franchise's greatest players a chance to put the final chapter of his NBA career where the first one began.
For Nets fans who watched Lopez grow from a first-round pick into the team's all-time leading scorer, seeing him wear a Brooklyn jersey one more time would be a pretty special way to close the book.
