After starring at Memphis and putting together a productive rookie season in the G League, Dain Dainja is looking to turn another strong summer into an NBA opportunity. Here's what Nets fans should know about Brooklyn's physical big man.
After breaking out during his senior season at Memphis and carrying that momentum into a productive rookie year in the NBA G League, Dain Dainja is looking to earn his first NBA opportunity.
The 6-foot-9 forward/center enters NBA Summer League with the Brooklyn Nets after spending last season with the Sioux Falls Skyforce, the Miami Heat's G League affiliate. While Dainja isn't the flashiest name on Brooklyn's Summer League roster, his combination of strength, efficient interior scoring, and rebounding makes him an intriguing developmental big man who could earn an opportunity with an NBA organization.
College Career
After four seasons at the college level, Dainja finally put everything together during his senior year at Memphis.
The 6-foot-9 big man began his career at Baylor before transferring to Illinois, where he spent two seasons in a reserve role. He then transferred to Memphis for his final season of eligibility, and it proved to be the best basketball of his career.
In 35 games, including 19 starts, Dainja averaged 14.6 points, 7.4 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 1.3 blocks, and 0.9 steals while shooting 61.5 percent from the field. His breakout season helped lead the Tigers to both the AAC regular-season and conference tournament championships, earning All-AAC honors along the way.
Professional Career
After going undrafted in the 2025 NBA Draft, Dainja signed with the Sioux Falls Skyforce, the NBA G League affiliate of the Miami Heat.
Despite averaging just 22.5 minutes per game, he was one of Sioux Falls' most productive players. In 36 games, including 20 starts, Dainja averaged 14.3 points, 6.0 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 1.1 blocks, and 0.6 steals while shooting an efficient 63 percent from the field.
That production earned him a spot on Brooklyn's Summer League roster, where he'll get another chance to showcase his game in front of NBA decision-makers.
Scouting Report
Dainja is one of the strongest players on Brooklyn's Summer League roster. At 6-foot-9 and roughly 255 pounds, he does most of his work around the basket, using his size and strength to finish through contact, establish deep post position, and create second-chance opportunities on the offensive glass.
He's an efficient interior scorer with a soft touch around the rim and better ball-handling ability than most players his size. Dainja is comfortable grabbing a defensive rebound and leading the break himself or attacking slower defenders off the dribble, giving him more versatility than the typical back-to-the-basket big.
The biggest question is how his skill set translates to today's NBA. He attempted just one three-pointer during his final college season, meaning nearly all of his offense comes in the paint. Defensively, he's more comfortable protecting the rim than switching onto smaller, quicker players, and at 6-foot-9, he's slightly undersized for a traditional NBA center.
Even so, players who consistently rebound, finish efficiently, and bring toughness around the basket always have value. If Dainja can continue producing at a high level while showing improvement defensively, he'll give himself a chance to stick within an NBA organization.
How He Fits With Brooklyn
Dainja appears to be a strong candidate to spend next season with the Long Island Nets.
He's already proven he can produce in the G League, and Brooklyn has consistently used Long Island as a place to develop young talent. A strong Summer League could earn Dainja an Exhibit 10 contract and keep him in the Nets' developmental pipeline.
