Michael Porter Jr. looked like he needed to play Superman on multiple occasions to keep the Brooklyn Nets in the game.
But one major sequence against the Boston Celtics showed he's human after all.
Hugo Gonzalez of the Celtics took advantage of a defensive mishap -- burying a wide-open three-pointer in the process to force overtime.
Brooklyn head coach Jordi Fernandez called the moment a miscommunication between the defense and he. Porter, however, elaborated more on the critical moment that swung the tide of the game.
"During the timeout, we had decided to zone up the three-point line and all have a certain zone on the arc. But then, they came out, and their play wasn't what we thought it was gonna be,” Porter said via Erik Slater of ClutchPoints.
Porter then detailed what he envisioned Boston would run.
“We thought they were all gonna start inside the three-point line, but they all started high," he said. "So at the last minute, some of us were confused if we were now manning up or zoning up still."
As Porter explained it: "Obviously, it was poorly executed."
He then admitted what he attempted to do while Noah Clowney was also on the same floor.
"I tried to pass the guy through to Noah on that side, and we just weren’t all on the same page," Porter said.
He added what Fernandez was trying to do from courtside as well.
“Coach Jordi was trying to communicate on the sideline, but it was just such crunch time, we didn’t know," Porter said. "But yeah, it’s on us, the players, to communicate, and obviously the No. 1 thing is don’t give up a wide open corner uncontested three."
Porter became blunt about the lapse on defense.
"We were just discombobulated," he said. "We got to learn from it, hopefully do better in the next situation.”
Porter clearly took some blame for not being at the right spot for that call. Every basketball team regardless of level never want to leave a man that open -- especially if they're attempting a wide-open three.
MPJ scored 30 points in 42 minutes of play. He's also hearing rapid trade chatter across the league but appears to be out on landing with the Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Lakers. Some analysts believe he'll stay out east and land with either the Philadelphia 76ers or Milwaukee Bucks.
