Michael Porter Jr. went far beyond basketball on The Journey Podcast, opening up about dating, heartbreak, faith, social media, and life as an NBA star. He also revealed why he drastically limited his phone use and shared some of his most controversial relationship beliefs.
Michael Porter Jr. has never been shy about speaking his mind, but his latest appearance on The Journey Podcast offered a much deeper look at the person behind the NBA player.
Porter Jr. sat down for nearly two hours to discuss his basketball career, leaving Denver, joining the Brooklyn Nets, relationships, fame, faith, social media, and some of the controversial opinions that have made him a popular figure online.
The conversation covered a lot of ground, but one of the biggest themes was Porter Jr.’s desire to live a more intentional life.
From projected No. 1 pick to NBA champion
Porter Jr. opened up about the difficult path that brought him to the NBA. Once viewed as a potential No. 1 overall pick, significant back problems caused his draft stock to plummet before the 2018 NBA Draft.
He explained how much work went into rebuilding his game and eventually finding his place in the league. Porter Jr. also reflected on his time in Denver, including winning an NBA championship alongside Nikola Jokic, before discussing his move to Brooklyn and the opportunity to take on a different role.
Jokic was another major topic. Porter Jr. offered insight into what the two-time MVP is actually like behind the scenes while also discussing where Jokic belongs among the greatest players in NBA history.
Fame, dating and protecting his personal life
Much of the podcast, however, went far beyond basketball.
Porter Jr. spoke candidly about how difficult dating can be as a famous NBA player. He discussed the challenge of figuring out whether someone genuinely likes him or is attracted to his money, status and lifestyle.
He also talked about heartbreak, self-sabotage and his desire to eventually find a wife and build a healthy relationship.
One of the more interesting revelations came when Porter Jr. explained that he has intentionally limited his access to social media. He said he gave his phone to his mother to restrict what he could access, keeping Instagram off his phone and only using it through his iPad.
For Porter Jr., the decision was about more than screen time. He believes constant access to technology and endless options can make it harder for people to be present and committed in their relationships.
That led to one of the podcast's most extensive discussions about modern dating, social media and changing relationship expectations.
Porter Jr. also addressed some of the relationship opinions that have gone viral from his social media clips, including his thoughts on dating history and body counts. He acknowledged that some of his views have generated plenty of backlash but maintained that he wants people to be able to disagree without immediately trying to cancel one another.
Faith has become a major part of his life
Another major portion of the conversation centered around Porter Jr.'s relationship with God.
He spoke openly about how important his faith has become and said one of the best pieces of advice he has received is to talk to God every day.
Porter Jr. was also asked what he would ask Jesus if he had five minutes with Him. His answer went well beyond a simple response, as he discussed questions he has about heaven, Lucifer, Jesus' sacrifice and the meaning behind life itself.
He described himself as a "truth seeker" and said he would give up everything he has for the opportunity to spend five minutes with Jesus and have answers to some of life's biggest questions.
The conversation eventually returned to basketball with a rapid-fire segment covering his favorite player growing up, the toughest player he's guarded, the biggest trash talker in the NBA and which player deserves more respect.
But by the end of the nearly two-hour conversation, it was clear that basketball was only one part of what Porter Jr. wanted to discuss.
The response from listeners reflected that.
Comments praised Porter Jr. for being genuine and open, with several fans saying they enjoy listening to him precisely because he doesn't shy away from expressing his actual opinions. Others simply praised his personality, with one listener calling him "one in a million."
For Nets fans, the biggest takeaway may be that there is far more to Porter Jr. than what he provides on the basketball court. His appearance on The Journey Podcast showed a player thinking deeply about his career, his faith, his relationships, and the kind of person he ultimately wants to become.
