From high school showdowns to top-ten draft picks, Mikel Brown Jr. and Darius Acuff Jr. bring their storied history to the NBA for a cross-conference clash.

The Brooklyn Nets may have a future rivalry with the Sacramento Kings due to the matchup history between Mikel Brown Jr. and Darius Acuff Jr.

Brown Jr. and Acuff Jr.'s rivalry dates back to their high school days. Both spent their senior season in Florida. Brooklyn's sixth overall pick attended DME Academy (Daytona Beach), and Sacramento's seventh overall pick attended IMG Academy (Bradenton).

Acuff Jr. was the nation's No. 1 point guard in the 2025 class, and Brown Jr. ranked second. The closeness of their rankings persisted all the way to the 2026 NBA Draft.

Their first matchup in high school was on Jan. 26, 2025, when Acuff Jr. led IMG to a close, thrilling victory over Brown Jr. and DME, 65-63. They met again two months later as McDonald's All-Americans on opposite teams.

Brown Jr. was on Team West, and Acuff Jr. was on Team East. The 6-foot-5 guard evened the series over his rival, as Team West beat Team East 105-92.

When college came around, they attended different programs in different conferences, but it didn't stop them from meeting for a third time in 11 months. Brown Jr. led the Louisville Cardinals, and Acuff Jr. led the Arkansas Razorbacks.

Louisville faced off against Arkansas on Dec. 3, 2025, and Acuff Jr.'s Razorbacks emerged victorious. However, Brown Jr. had the better performance, scoring 22 points on 7-for-19 shooting.

They are facing off against each other two more times throughout July in the Summer League. Their first meeting is next Saturday at the Golden 1 Center during the California Classic.

The Las Vegas Summer League will mark Brown Jr. and Acuff Jr. meeting for the fifth time in a year and a half. Brooklyn will face Sacramento on July 14 at the Thomas & Mack Center.

A rivalry between the two should exist for the foreseeable future. The two will see each other twice a season, as Brown Jr. is in the Eastern Conference and Acuff Jr. is in the Western Conference.

Despite the conference difference, their matchups should be must-see TV. Brown Jr. understands that rivalries attract fans and that the two will see one another for the rest of their careers.

"Basketball nowadays, that rivalry brings along a lot of fans, and more people want to watch, and it’s competitive," Brown Jr. told the New York Post's Steve Serby. "We know we’re going to see each other for the rest of our lives, so buckle up."
