Brooklyn has made a final decision with its head coach, opting to keep him on board.
The Brooklyn Nets endured one of its worst seasons in franchise history by finishing 20-62 overall.
But that record never jeopardized the future of head coach Jordi Fernández. He's earned the full confidence of the front office moving forward along with his coaching staff.
Fernández and his entire coaching staff all agreed to multiyear contract extensions. Per team policy, terms of the deals were not released.
However, general manager Sean Marks revealed why he decided to avoid opening up the Nets' head coaching position.
“Jordi is a tremendous leader who, along with his coaching staff, put his stamp on this franchise from the moment he arrived in Brooklyn,” said Marks in a news release.
Marks outlined his observations in choosing to keep Fernandez.
“Over his first two seasons, Jordi has built a strong foundation rooted in player development, a competitive spirit and honest communication, all of which have been embraced throughout our roster," Marks said. "The energy and passion the entire staff relentlessly pour into our players reverberates throughout the organization, and we are excited to have this group continue to lead our franchise into the future.”
Fernández was named the 24th head coach in the franchise’s history on April 22, 2024. The Badalona, Spain, native arrived in Brooklyn following 15 years as an NBA assistant with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Denver Nuggets and Sacramento Kings.
Fernández’s international coaching journey also led him to positions with helping lead the national teams of Spain, Nigeria and Canada, where he served as head coach for the bronze medal-winning team at the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup along with Canada’s Olympic entry at the 2024 Paris Games.
Monday's signings promise continuity moving forward for the Nets. Keeping the coaching staff intact also might indicate the team will aim to keep key players.
Michael Porter Jr. is likely to return after hearing multiple trade inquiries. The Nets' leading scorer couldn't finish out the season due to a bad ankle. The Nets also have to decide the fate of Nic Claxton, Tyson Etienne and other veterans who flashed late.
Fernández and his staff can now also focus on who to go after in the 2026 NBA draft. Many Nets fans hope it will be AJ Dybantsa of BYU.
Nets Roundtable also presented Keaton Wagler of Illinois, Darius Acuff of Arkansas and Darryn Peterson of Kansas as first-round possibilities.
