Dallas hires a championship-proven leader, pairing collegiate standout Dusty May with Cooper Flagg to revitalize a franchise seeking an immediate return to NBA elite status.

There's a new head coach in town for the Dallas Mavericks.

Per multiple reports, the Mavs have hired Michigan Wolverines head men's basketball coach Dusty May to lead the way as the franchise heads in a new direction.

It's been an offseason of change in Dallas with a new president of basketball operations already hired, a major change at head coach completed and a top-10 draft selection on the way.

For a more in-depth look on the hire from a local perspective, Mavs Roundtable writer Jonah Kubicek has more:

May turned Michigan basketball around in a major way over his two-year stint with the collegiate program. After taking over an 8-win team in 2f024, he immediately led the Wolverines to a Big Ten Championship his first year with an NCAA National Championship run in 2025-26.

It's easy to see why the Mavericks, who have been on a nose dive in both performance and reputation since trading away star player Luka Doncic, would look at May as the right hire. A perennial winner with a championship track record is exactly what Dallas needs.

With a generational superstar in tow, forward Cooper Flagg, the Mavericks now feel they have the right leadership in place to help the franchise compete its way back into the upper-echelon of the NBA.

Along with Flagg, the team also holds the No. 9 overall selection in this year's NBA Draft, granting Dallas another opportunity, via trade-up or by standing pat, to add even more talent to its roster.

May will also provide the Mavs with a magnifying presence that could look to draw free agent talent in the coming years as well.

This is a hire set to help Dallas rebound after a tumultuous couple of years.
