Mere minutes after the Feb. 5 NBA trade deadline had passed, the Brooklyn Nets made a surprising decision to reshape their roster and end a five-year tenure with their guard. The Nets, unable to find a trade partner, decided to waive Cam Thomas and let him find a new team. He’s free to sign with any contender as a free agent. It marks the end of a relationship that apparently take a bad turn in late January, specifically when Thomas was pulled against the Celtics on Jan. 23 for refusing to shoot as the shot clock ran down, according to ESPN. It was a stunning way to end the Thomas era, as there were many reports of interested parties in acquiring him, particularly the Milwaukee Bucks to pair him with two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Thomas is averaging 15.6 points and 3.1 assists, shooting a mere 46.1 percent field goal percentage through 24 games and eight starts this season. He missed 20 games with a hamstring strain. It’s surprising that no home was found, given that he only had a $6 million salary for teams looking for more scoring to take on ahead of the postseason. But it’s clear that his time in Brooklyn had to end at the deadline, suitor or not. Thomas is now free to join whichever franchise he wishes.
Here is the full story from Nets Roundtable writer Dean Simon on the surprising post-deadline move that got nothing in return.
Thomas was electric for the Nets in 2024-25 and was an exciting shot-hunter to watch through limited appearances. It’s unfortunate that Brooklyn won’t recoup any sort of draft capital for their former No. 27 overall pick, but he does have a lot freer choice in his next decision.
