The Dallas Mavericks have yet to name their next general manager after firing Nico Harrison back in November, ten months after altering the franchise permanently by trading away Luca Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers. They have had interim Michael Finley in the role for the last two months, with Mark Cuban returning as well in an unofficial advisory role. Could an internal move make any sense? One with double duties?
There are thoughts now that current head coach Jason Kidd could quietly emerge as a frontrunner for the GM role. Kidd has also had head coaching jobs with Milwaukee and Brooklyn but has never had the type of title like general manager. So, it would not only be his first time serving in that capacity but also doing so while in two roles. No situation like that currently exists in the league.
Here is the full story from Mavs Roundtable writer Jonah Kubicek on the potential idea floating around and whether it makes sense or not.
It might assuage fans to have familiarity with their next hire there, as an internal promotion or move isn’t expected, but that doesn’t mean it’s the best or right one. That, and the move probably would have already happened.
