The veteran guard solidifies his leadership in Atlanta for another year, securing a fresh deal after providing elite scoring and a steadying locker room presence for a young Hawks roster.
One of the NBA’s most reliable veterans has a new deal to stay with his newest club for another year.
Per ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Atlanta Hawks and guard CJ McCollum have reached an agreement on a one-year, $21 million extension.
For more on the extension details and McCollum’s impact on Atlanta, Hawks Roundtable writer Grant Afseth has more.
McCollum’s veteran impact has been notable for the Hawks, as has been his presence as a leader for previous organizations as well.
Since entering the NBA in 2013 with the Portland Trail Blazers as the No. 10 overall selection. McCollum grew both as a scorer and leader. He was named the Most Improved Player in 2016 and helped lead the Blazers back to the Western Conference Finals during the 2018-19 season, the first such appearance for the team since 2000.
After signing a $100 million three-year extension with Portland, McCollum would eventually be traded to the New Orleans Pelicans, where he served a key role as a standard-bearer for the roster and organization.
While his time in New Orleans yielded only one playoff appearance and led to the first year in which he’d missed the postseason in his career, his overall impact was a positive one and maintained his reputation as a trusted role model for young rosters.
He carried and has continued to fit that billing with the Washington Wizards before joining the Hawks in 2026 via another trade.
With this latest extension, McCollum is set to play his 14th NBA season.
Last year, he averaged 18.7 points per game over his 41 matchups with Atlanta while shooting 45.6% from the floor and contributing 4.1 assists per game.
