Despite a stinging sweep by the Knicks and controversial post-game comments, Cleveland prioritizes stability and a stellar 116-48 regular-season record to lead their upcoming championship pursuit.
The idea of a head coaching change in Cleveland appears to be far from reality, per ESPN's Shams Charania, who reported that Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Kenny Atkinson is expected to retain his position as the team's leader for the 2026-27 year ahead.
Atkinson has led the Cavs to two consecutive playoff appearances with an Eastern Conference Semifinals exit in 2024-25 and an Eastern Conference Finals exit in 2025-26.
The most recent exit, a sweep by the New York Knicks, raised questions about Atkinson's future, but those curiosities are now seemingly put to rest, barring anything unforeseen.
For more on Cleveland's decision to keep Atkinson in his role, Cavs Roundtable writer Ashish Mathur has the latest.
Atkinson's leadership came under fire after claiming the team had "analytically" won two of its three games against the Knicks while being down 0-3 in the series. The comments raised several eyebrows and drew criticism as an ineffective approach to the team's very real situation in which it was on the brink of elimination.
However, the coach has led the team to the postseason in both of his years as its head coach and has drummed up an impressive 116-48 record in the regular season. Those very real results are more than enough to justify team governor Dan Gilbert's decision to keep Atkinson at the helm of the team.
Gilbert took to social media following his club's Eastern Conference Finals elimination to praise the work that had been done to get them to a deep playoff run, but also highlight work necessary to continue improving.
Perhaps with Atkinson solidified for what should be an eventful offseason for the team, the continuity can help the Cavaliers reach the heights they are pursuing.
