A 13-game winning streak snapped as Victor Wembanyama outdueled Jalen Brunson in Manhattan. Now, New York must fix costly turnovers to prevent San Antonio from making history.
It took 46 days, but the New York Knicks have finally dropped a matchup and they do so in their first trip home to Manhattan in the NBA Finals. It was a 115-111 battle with the San Antonio Spurs, which included some physical play, late surges and high scoring superstar play.
Spurs star Victor Wembanyama and Knicks playmaker Jalen Brunson both totaled 32 points on the night as they competed voraciously throughout a tightly-contested Game 3.
The Spurs are trying to re-write history by becoming the first team to ever win an NBA Finals series after losing both
Two of the biggest deciding factors that led to the Knicks' first playoff loss after a 13-game win streak came down to limiting Wembanyama (or their lack thereof) and turnovers.
For the first time this series, Wembanyama broke free of the defensive prowess previously shown by New York center Karl-Anthony Towns. It's the first game in the Finals thus far in which the Spurs star scored more than 30 points, including 10 in the final frame, helping to seal the victory in the clutch.
However, the Knicks had some self-inflicted wounds that caused them some hardships as well. With 13 turnovers, the Knicks surrendered 21 points off of turnovers while only securing 7 themselves. This made a massive difference in the game and its flow throughout.
The Knicks will have their chance to bounce back after the loss with another game in Madison Square Garden on Wednesday evening.
No team has ever lost a Finals series after starting 2-0 with both wins on the road.New York is determined not to be the first.
