Free agent guard Mike Conley had a busy few days where his future changed thrice after being traded twice by the Minnesota Timberwolves and Chicago Bulls. Initially sent to Chicago as part of a three-team deal on Tuesday, Conley was then traded to the Charlotte Hornets on Wednesday. By the next night, the Hornets had waived Conley, freeing him up to join whichever team he wished. That is looking to be his initial home since 2023, as the Timberwolves are reportedly “working on timing” regarding re-signing Conley, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
Conley was caught in the washing machine of the NBA trade deadline but is looking to land back where he started just earlier this week. The 38-year-old brings a strong veteran presence back to the locker room, playing 44 games for Minnesota this season. He has started in nine for the Timberwolves but is averaging career lows of 4.4 points and 2.9 assists. The former All-Star isn’t the presence at point guard he used to be, but he still offers value back to a contending Minnesota squad.

Minnesota was one of the rumored teams vying for land Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo, and they initially traded Conley in the three-team deal to free up some cap space. They had to pivot and ended up acquiring Ayo Dosunmu, which could see Conley’s role get reduced. The likely return of Conley would come against the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday, should the two sides finalize a deal. The Timberwolves will first take on the New Orleans Pelicans on Friday night.
