As NBA free agency looms, the King’s future remains shrouded in mystery. With no offer on the table, Los Angeles may pivot toward a new era.
With NBA Free agency fast-approaching, the future of the Association’s biggest name remains uncertain.
Superstar forward LeBron James, 41, has not yet re-signed with the Los Angeles Lakers, where he’s suited up since the 2018-19 season. Nor has it become apparent at all whether or not he plans to continue his playing career.
Beyond his side of the decision, it also sounds like the Lakers have not yet been in a hurry to get anything done either.
Per ESPN’s Shams Charania, Los Angeles has not yet made a contract offer for James to return.
While the Lakers sort out what may or may not be next for them and James, the team is still hoping to build a contender with Luka Dončić and recently re-signed guard Austin Reaves. For a look at their potential, Lakers Roundtable writer Grant Mara has more.
The Lakers have nearly $50 million in cap space available after their extension with Reaves. Locking in James for his 24th NBA season is sure to put Los Angeles right back into contention for the Western Conference in 2026-27, but the Lakers may want to pursue a new direction.
With Dončić settled in, Reaves extended and an upcoming decision to be made on Rui Hachimura, the Lakers may feel that the club has the leadership it needs to embrace a new era.
If so, James would become an unrestricted free agent as the open market begins for players on June 30.
With only days left before Free Agency opens, this will continue to be one of the more impactful and consequential stories to develop.
James’ desires could be to remain in Los Angeles, but his realistic future may exist elsewhere. And that’s all under the assumption that he chooses to continue playing at all.
Last year, James appeared in 60 games, his fewest since the 2022-23 season, and averaged 20.9 points per game (a career low), 7.2 assists per game and 6.1 rebounds per game all while shooting 51.5% from the field.
