The San Antonio Spurs were holding their breath when Victor Wembanyama went down with a knee injury on Wednesday night in the team’s win over the New York Knicks. He missed most of the fourth quarter after hobbling to the locker room, though he did return to finish the game on the bench. The Spurs have been very careful with their approach to their star player, and he didn’t travel with them to Indianapolis for Friday’s game against the Indiana Pacers out of an abundance of caution.
Thankfully, the team avoided the worst-case scenario of major ligament damage to Wembanyama’s knee. An MRI on Thursday showed that he was clear of that fear in his hyperextended left knee, sources told ESPN. He is now considered day-to-day and will be questionable for San Antonio’s return home to host the Portland Trail Blazers on Saturday.
Here is the full story from Spurs Roundtable writer Jonah Kubicek on the positive update.
Now, once Wembanyama misses Friday’s game, he’ll only be able to miss four more games this season before being ineligible for individual awards in what would be a second season in a row. However, it could help the Spurs financially if Wembanyama isn’t eligible for the supermax contract. It would also be nice to celebrate him winning his first Defensive Player of the Year, but a healthy Wembanyama is certainly most important to the franchise in the short- and long-term.
