Cameron Johnson could improve in year two with Denver.
Denver Nuggets forward Cameron Johnson is entering his second year with the franchise, and after a down season, he’s looking to have a bounce-back year as the Nuggets try to compete for an NBA championship.
Last season, Johnson averaged 12.2 points per game, 3.8 rebounds and 2.4 assists. While he was productive at times, the numbers were a dip in performance compared to past seasons.
Johnson spoke to the media recently about returning to Denver for another season, and he believes he’s more confident in the system that head coach David Adelman has in place for him.
Ron Chenoy-Imagn Images“It’s slowing down, I think that’s the main thing,” Johnson said. “It slowed down at one point last year.”
Johnson also mentioned that he’s more comfortable this season with the Nuggets because he’s getting a better feel for where his teammates are on the court. He mentioned how the offense runs through center Nikola Jokic, and he’s gotten a better feel for where his teammates are at all times.
This season will be very important for Cameron Johnson. He’s coming off a tough season, and some fans have been calling for him to be traded.
His contract is expensive, and if he continues to underperform, it will be difficult for Denver to move on from him because of the deal he has.
Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn ImagesWhat made Johnson so great in his past years with the Phoenix Suns and Brooklyn Nets was his ability to contribute on both ends of the floor. He has the ability to defend the perimeter and shoot consistently from long range, and the Nuggets will need him to bring that element of his game back this season.
It’s not just Cameron Johnson who needs to raise his level of play as well for the Denver Nuggets. Guard Christian Braun is in a similar situation this season, and he, too, will have to perform better because of his contract he has.
Braun had a tough season shooting the ball last year, as he only shot 30.1 percent from three-point range during the regular season. If both players can find their confidence this season, it could bode well for a deep playoff run.
Ron Chenoy-Imagn ImagesIt will be interesting to see if David Adelman adjusts anything in his game plan to give Cameron Johnson better opportunities to score. With more continuity, the Nuggets could find their way back into the mix in terms of title contention.
