The Denver Nuggets may be just 2-2 over their last four games after winning seven games in a row prior to that, but one positive they can take away from this stretch is that Cameron Johnson appears to be finding his groove.
There were high hopes for Johnson’s arrival in Denver. He was traded there for Michael Porter Jr. this summer and was undoubtedly expected to have a similar, if not the same, level of offensive output that his predecessor did.
Through the first couple weeks of the 2025-26 campaign, that was not the case.
Coming off a season in which Johnson averaged a career-high 18.8 points per game with the Brooklyn Nets, to see him then stack up games where he scored in single digits was unexpected.
However, in the Nuggets’ last four games, Johnson has averaged 15.5 points per game, scoring 19 points against the Chicago Bulls on Nov. 17, 14 points against the New Orleans Pelicans on Nov. 19, nine points against the Houston Rockets on Nov. 21, and a season-high 20 points against the Sacramento Kings on Nov. 22.
Following the loss to the Kings, Johnson said during a postgame interview that his comfort level out on the court, in Denver’s system, is improving with each passing day and game.
“Still a lot of work to do,” Johnson said. “Just figuring out where people are, what we’re looking for, what we’re doing, and how I can best serve the team in that way.”
Through the first month of the season, Johnson is averaging 9.4 points per game.
With another starter in Aaron Gordon, now out for 4-6 weeks with a right hamstring strain, this stretch over the next month may be an opportunity for Johnson to continue to build off what he’s done over the last four games.
The Nuggets have been able to lean on their three-time MVP in Nikola Jokić all season, as he’s averaged 30.4 points, 13 rebounds and 10.8 assists and has yet to miss a game in this new campaign. Johnson, on the other hand, hasn’t proven to be as reliable.
Now this is Johnson’s chance to step up and right the ship, being that the Nuggets are without Gordon, as well as another starter in Christian Braun, who is out with a left ankle sprain.
Johnson will have his first opportunity to do so in Denver’s next game, which is against the Memphis Grizzlies tonight at 8 p.m. EST.
