The Denver Nuggets' stretch over the past five games has arguably been their worst of the season, as it has been the only time they've gone 1-4 or worse in a five-game stretch this year. Going 0-3 against their toughest stretch of opponents this year and then losing to Cleveland, something has to change for the Nuggets.
If you want to point to excuses, you can continue to highlight injuries, with key players in Aaron Gordon and Peyton Watson sidelined due to injuries. However, they've won games all season with more players injured, so it seems as though this team needs to find some sort of momentum before the break.
In his best game of the season since returning from injury, Christian Braun logged 32 minutes, scored 20 points, and grabbed five rebounds in the loss to the Cavaliers. It might've been a good game for him individually, but he clearly wasn't satisfied with the result after the game.
When asked by a reporter whether the team is struggling to overcome the idea of one game being left before the break, Braun shared that he's embracing a different mindset during this.
"I think that's kind of got to go out the window...We just haven't had a bad stretch. We need to do a good job in the last one of just getting a win, most importantly. But, getting some momentum, playing the right way, doing the right things, especially on the defensive end...," Braun said.
The Nuggets' lone win over this five-game stretch came against the Chicago Bulls, the worst team of the five and expected to be a play-in or lottery team. Up next for the Nuggets is the Memphis Grizzlies on Tuesday before the All-Star break, a team they should be able to handle with ease.
"I'm excited to get this next win and then get a little bit of a break then come back and play well," he added.
The Grizzlies are riding a three-game losing streak, so one of these teams has to overcome their struggles on Wednesday.
Even though they've struggled as of late, they are still the third seed in the Western Conference entering Tuesday's NBA slate. The San Antonio Spurs have begun to separate themselves as the second seed, but there's still plenty of basketball left this season for the Nuggets to close the gap.
Regardless of who is on the court for the Nuggets on Wednesday, keeping that mentality that Braun is pushing is essential for them to head into the break on a good note and not set themselves up for failure in the second half of the season.
