The Denver Nuggets have been going through a turbulent stretch as of late, alternating wins and losses in their last six outings to push their record to a still good but less impressive 15-6 on the season.
What’s also made this recent stretch so disappointing is that the Nuggets refuse to win at home, dropping their last four games at Ball Arena. In fact, the last time the Nuggets won a game at home was on Nov. 8, which was nearly a month ago. Since the Nuggets don’t return home from their road trip until Dec. 15, that means that drought will extend at least beyond a month.
However, the fact that the Nuggets have been so iffy at home but are still among the league’s highest-performing teams this season indicates just how effective they’ve been on the road. After Jamal Murray dropped 52 points to lead the Nuggets over the Pacers in Indiana on Wednesday, coach David Adelman took the time to credit his team’s resolve on the road.
“Maybe it's just the idea of having a veteran team that understands how to do this right,” Adelman said. “We've been on the road for a long time. You kind of figure out what your routine is, how you get through it. Now you've been to these cities over and over. You've been in the same locker rooms, usually the same hotel. I do think that matters. I think experience matters.”
Adelman credited his team’s experience and poise for the fact that they never seem to get phased on the road, whether it be in a raucous environment or in a tense-championship moment with their legacies on the line. When it comes to the postseason, more often than not, it’s both.
“They're not afraid of the crowd noise, the moment, the energy of the home team,” Adelman said. “We just kind of play our game. We must be at eight of our last 12 (on the road) then, because we've lost four in a row at home. I don't know. I'm proud of the guys though. They had a mature way about them throughout all those games, some tough environments.”
While it will be another week and a half or so until the Nuggets will get their next chance to end their home losing streak, they can at least attempt to win a second consecutive game for the first time in two weeks against the Atlanta Hawks on Friday.
