The Oklahoma City Thunder and Denver Nuggets met for the third time this season on Monday, another thriller won by the Thunder on a game-winning shot by reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
This one was less contentious than their last meeting on February 27, which saw Thunder guard Lu Dort get hit with a flagrant 2 and being ejected from the game after clipping Nuggets center Nikola Jokic with what looked to be an intentional hip check, knocking Jokic to the floor.
Jokic popped up and immediately confronted Dort, leading to the two sides having to be pulled apart as Jokic grabbed the jersey of Jaylin Williams.
On Monday, Dort was hit with a flagrant 1 foul after swinging his arm and hitting Jokic in the face while navigating a screen.
After the game, Jokic was asked how his nose was from the errant arm of Dort.
"It's good, it's good," he said.
Asked if he thought this play was unnecessary, like the hip check from two weeks ago, Jokic replied, "No."
Finally, Jokic was asked if the two sides were able to move past these incidents.
"It was over since last time," he said.
The flagrant 1 on Dort ended up benefiting the Nuggets, as the foul occurred with 1:12 remaining in the game and the Nuggets trailing 123-116.
Denver got two shots and the ball with the flagrant 1 ruling. Jokic hit the first free throw, but missed the second. On the ensuing offensive possession, Jokic hit a corner three to cap off a four point possession to cut the lead to 123-120.
After the February 27 game, Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault stated that he expects any trip to be called a flagrant 2 moving forward, given what the called on Dort.
Ahead of Monday's game, Daigneault admitted that Dort's play was unnecessary and that he didn't help the situation with his comments, but that he was trying to defend his player and his team. Dort has also stated the flagrant 2 was an unnecessary play.
As the players were walking off the floor following SGA's game-winner, Jokic made it a point to shake hands with everyone on OKC.
Dort and Jokic shook hands, and Dort said he apologized to Jokic for what happened, telling the media that he didn't mean to hit Jokic in the face, but that his arms go everywhere as he's fighting over screens.
The Thunder and Nuggets will meet for a fourth and final time in the regular season on April 10.
