The Denver Nuggets picked up an important comeback win on Thursday as they downed the San Antonio Spurs, 136-131.
Denver trailed 106-94 entering the fourth quarter, but with ten minutes remaining, they began to make their run.
Down 119-118 with five minutes to go, Nuggets guard Jamal Murray got into his zone to secure a victory for his squad.
He kicked off the run with a three, followed up with a turnaround jumper in the restricted area, and hit a midrange jumper off a Nikola Jokic assist. The mini-run by Murray, coupled with stout defense that forced missed field goals by the Spurs, ave the Nuggets a 125-119 lead.
They never looked back, holding on for the victory as Murray iced the game with free throws.
After the game, Jokic spoke about his team's play down the stretch, crediting Murray for leading the charge, and the rest of his teammates for knocking down shots as well.
Murray finished the fourth quarter with 16 points on 5-7 shooting, 2-4 from three, and 4-4 from the line.
After the game, Jokic was asked if he knows when Murray is about to enter one of his hot scoring zones.
"When he makes a couple and he asks for screen, 'just let me go.' There is moments that I feel like that, but when I'm playing, I don't feel like that," he said after thinking it over.
Jokic didn't score in the final five minutes, but did have a couple of assists, including one to Cameron Johnson for a three.
Despite not scoring at all in the fourth quarter, Jokic once again put up historical numbers, finishing with 31 points, 20 rebounds, and 12 assists. He has more 30-20-10 games than everyone combined in the last 50 years.
Murray was the leading scorer for Denver, finishing with 39 points. All five Nuggets starters scored in double figures.
The Nuggets scored back-to-back big victories on Wednesday and Thursday, blowing out the Houston Rockets to help their playoff seeding, and following up with a comeback victory against the Spurs.
The Nuggets are fifth in the West, but only a half game behind the Los Angeles Lakers, who are third. The Rockets and Minnesota Timberwolves are all in the mix with only one game separating the four teams.
Denver has the 16th toughest schedule remaining, but the Timberwolves and Lakers have tougher schedules.
If the Nuggets want to be one of the top four teams in the West, they'll need continued top tier shot making from Murray and overall excellent play from Jokic.
