The NBA world was shocked on Saturday night when the Denver Nuggets were defeated by the struggling Sacramento Kings. Denver lost with a final score of 128-123, and even had Nikola Jokic put up 44 points, 13 rebounds, and 7 assists on 57% shooting from the field.
As upset as Nuggets fans were about the loss, it seems like Jokic was more upset than anyone else.
Even after the loss, the Denver Nuggets still have an overall record of 12-4, good for the second seed in the brutal Western Conference. Despite that, Jokic isn't happy with his team's overall performance.
“I think that 12-4 is not the real picture," Jokic said about his team's record. "I think we are not that good. I think we need to be much better if we want to do something big.”
12-4 is a fantastic record, but when comparing it to the 16-1 Oklahoma City Thunder, then Jokic has a point. However, his ability to be that critical is something that will push the Nuggets into becoming an even better team.
In Jokic's eyes, there were some specific reasons for the game falling apart. In the first half, he blamed himself for missed layups and turnovers. However, in the second half, he believe the Kings outpaced the Nuggets.
"I don’t know, it was a really hard game for us, heavy game for us," Jokic said. "First half, for me especially, a lot of missed layups, turnovers. We were kind of one step behind. They played really good, they were pushing the pace in the third quarter. Every shot was kind of heavy, we had a game yesterday. It looked like everything was heavy for us."
Additionally, Jokic credited the Kings' ability to attack the rim. It was something that the Nuggets were just too slow to keep up with, which could be heavily attributed to missing Aaron Gordon in the lineup.
"They were attacking the rim," Jokic admitted. "That’s something we are usually really good at, but they were just attacking us, the help was not there. Like I said, we were always kind of a step slow, one step slower than them."
