The Oklahoma City Thunder are the clear top dogs of the Western Conference, boasting a 12-1 record, with their lone loss a road game against the Portland Trail Blazers, which they lost 121-119. In terms of the second-best team in the West, it's clearly the Denver Nuggets, who are riding a six-game winning streak and are 9-1 in their last 10 games.
On Saturday night, they'll put their winning streak on the line against the Minnesota Timberwolves, who have caught fire as of late after their blowout loss to the New York Knicks. A star-studded matchup with playoff history between the two, the Nuggets will look to prevail with a shorthanded and injury-riddled roster.
Two big names headline the Nuggets' injury report as OUT, with Christian Braun (ankle) and Cameron Johnson (bicep) set to be sidelined for Denver. Braun's injury is more serious, set to rule him out for at least the next six weeks, while Johnson's is less serious.
For Braun, he's struggled in comparison to his breakout 2024-25 season, where he was one of the most efficient players in all of basketball. Through 11 games this year (including his early exit vs the LA Clippers), he's averaging 11.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 3.0 assists on 52.6 eFG% and just 21.4% from beyond the arc.
As for Johnson, he's continued to struggle as he adjusts to his move to the Nuggets. He holds averages of 7.2 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.8 assists on 37.2% shooting from the field while starting in all 11 games for the Nuggets. Johnson flashed signs of being an ideal player for this Denver system last year, and perhaps being sidelined can allow him to regroup.
The last notable name for Denver is Nikola Jokic, as the star center is listed as QUESTIONABLE with a left wrist sprain. Jokic has battled an injury with his right wrist in the past, so at least it's a positive sign for Nuggets fans not to see his right wrist listed. Jokic is coming off a season-high 55-point performance against the Los Angeles Clippers.
If the Nuggets are without Jokic, the pressure falls on the shoulders of Jamal Murray and Aaron Gordon. Denver has seen in the past, such as opening night against the Golden State Warriors, that Gordon can rise to being a go-to scorer for the Nuggets when needed. As for Murray, having a capable backup option in Jonas Valanciunas should make life easier for him.
The status of Jokic will be one to monitor in the lead-up, with tip-off in Minnesota set for 8:00 p.m. EST.
