Patrick Beverley isn't fully in love with the Nuggets' signing of DeRozan.

Signing DeMar DeRozan certainly wasn't the biggest move that the Denver Nuggets could have made this offseason and even though they have him on the roster now, he is at best a temporary fix on a one-year contract.

DeRozan does add another experienced scorer to the roster and with DeRozan being a wing he helps supplement the loss of Peyton Watson after a long and largely fruitless free agency discussion that led to Denvers home grown talent heading to the Cleveland Cavaliers in a sign-and-trade deal.

But as much as DeRozan fixes some problems with the Denver roster, he also contributes to some major problems with the team as well, which is why former NBA player Patrick Beverley is not a fan of some parts of the signing.

Beverley Has Concerns

While Beverley said that he liked the offensive side of the deal and gave credit to DeRozan's long career as an offensive force in the league, there is an entire other half of the game that Beverley thinks the Nuggets are neglecting, which he revealed during an episode of his podcast The Pat Bev Show.

“I hate it defensively. The Nuggets already were cones, right? I think you need defenders, especially in the playoffs. Anyone knows in the West, you have to be able to defend," Beverley said. "I don’t think right now with what they have, they’re an elite defensive team."

Beverley is spot on with Denver's defensive issues. Looking at the roster as it stands, the Nuggets don't really have a single stellar defensive player on the roster. The team as it stands is almost singularly geared toward offense and that disparity between the two sides of the team's game was evident last season when looking at the numbers.

Tales of Offense and Defense

While the Nuggets were the highest-scoring offense in basketball last season, they were 21st in opponent points scored per game and 25th in opponent field goal attempts per game.

There simply isn't enough defensive mobility or tenacity on the roster to limit opposing attempts at putting up shots or getting to the basket and adding DeRozan to the roster, especially at 37-years-old, doesn't help that problem.

As Beverley touched on, such a serious lack of defense can be covered up throughout the regular season with a dominant offense, but the pressure cooker that is the NBA playoffs reveals those defensive lapses and makes them hurt.

Beverley liked the move overall and the offense DeRozan adds is hard to deny, but the defensive flaws he identified are a serious issue for the Nuggets that could come back to bite them as the season goes on.
