Jokic is set to make more money in the long haul. Nuggets just have to play their cards right.
As speculation continues to swirl around Nikola Jokić's contract situation, the Denver Nuggets have little reason to panic.
Recent reports suggested the three-time MVP could wait until next summer before signing his next extension rather than putting pen to paper this offseason.
While that immediately sparked concern among some fans, the decision appears to be more about maximizing his future earnings than uncertainty about his long-term future in Denver.
According to NBA insider Marc Stein, Jokić is expected to delay extension talks.
However, HoopsHype's Michael Scotto reported that the Nuggets superstar has recently reiterated his desire to remain in Denver for the long haul, even if he decides to wait another year before signing a new deal.
If Jokić postpones extension negotiations until the summer of 2027, he becomes eligible for a larger contract that includes an additional season. For arguably the best player in basketball, waiting is simply the financially smarter option.
That shouldn't be confused with a desire to leave the franchise.

Since arriving as the 41st overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft, Jokić has become synonymous with Nuggets basketball.
He has transformed Denver from a playoff hopeful into a perennial championship contender, winning three MVP awards, leading the franchise to its first NBA championship in 2023 and establishing himself as the greatest player in team history.
Nothing about his actions over the past decade suggests he is looking for a fresh start elsewhere.
In fact, Jokić has repeatedly emphasized that he values stability. He has never shown interest in the free-agent spotlight and has consistently praised the organization, his teammates and life in Denver.
From a basketball standpoint, remaining with the Nuggets also makes the most sense.
State of the Nuggets
Denver still has a championship-caliber foundation built around Jokić and Jamal Murray, even as the front office explores changes to improve the supporting cast.
According to HoopsHype, the Nuggets are listening to offers on nearly everyone besides Jokić as they attempt to get below the NBA's second apron while remaining competitive.
Those conversations shouldn't be interpreted as a sign that Denver is rebuilding. Instead, they reflect a front office trying to maximize the championship window around the league's biggest superstar.

Jokić has also never been the type of player to use contract negotiations as leverage publicly. Unlike other superstars around the NBA, he rarely comments on his future and has generally allowed business matters to play out behind the scenes.
That approach makes it easy to understand why he would simply wait for the more lucrative extension rather than rush into an agreement.

Waiting another year to sign a contract may generate headlines, but it does not change the bigger picture.
For Denver, the priority remains building the best possible roster around Jokić. For Jokić, waiting could simply mean earning more money while remaining exactly where he has always wanted to be.
