Why Nuggets Should Still Make One More Move After DeMar DeRozan Signing

The Denver Nuggets have gone through the offseason making free agent moves to help bolster their second unit, and just recently, they added one more piece who could improve that part of the roster. 

The Nuggets signed veteran small forward DeMar DeRozan to a one-year, $3.9 million deal. DeRozan was recently let go by the Sacramento Kings, but Denver believes he has plenty to provide for them. 

Still, Denver should consider looking into adding more pieces to their roster, as their guard depth could be an issue moving forward. 

As it looks right now, behind Jamal Murray are Tyus Jones and KJ Simpson at the reserve point guard spots. The Nuggets still have two roster spots to fill, and they could go towards improving the backcourt bench. 

Last season, the Nuggets were relatively healthy come playoff time when looking at the backcourt. 

Jamal Murray and Christian Braun were available all throughout the first round against the Timberwolves, but it was not enough to get past them. 

The Nuggets acquired Tyus Jones in the middle of last season, but he was not too productive as he didn’t see the court much. He finished his 2026 Nuggets tenure averaging 2.2 points per game and over 1 rebound and assist. 

KJ Simpson is also a player who is inexperienced as he only averaged 4.6 points per game last season. It would be hard to imagine a Nuggets team competing down the stretch with guards who didn’t see the court much last season. 

Luckily for Denver, there are still some options on who they could add before the season begins. One option is former Heat, Hawks and Lakers guard Gabe Vincent. 

Vincent is 30 years old, but he may have enough to provide as a solid depth piece for this team. Vincent would be adding shooting and ball handling to this second unit, and what helps the most is his playoff experience. 

If the Nuggets are looking to add one or two more pieces, postseason experience should be something they should look into considering where their core is at right now. 

The Nuggets starting lineup is made up of players who are still in a position to compete for a championship, and adding veteran pieces off the bench gives them some insurance come postseason time. 

Denver’s front office has been making moves as the offseason progresses and it would not be safe to say they’re done just yet.
