Despite an awful NBA Draft Lottery experience, the Indiana Pacers' fan base has reason to be excited.
The Indiana Pacers were hoping to have a top-four pick in the 2026 NBA Draft. With that pick, they would have landed one of the top four prospects in the class in the form of AJ Dybantsa, Darryn Peterson, Cameron Boozer, or Caleb Wilson.
Unfortunately, the NBA Draft Lottery did not go their way on Sunday.
When all was said and done, the Pacers' pick slide to No. 5 and conveyed to the Los Angeles Clippers as part of the Ivica Zubac trade.
Following that development, fans immediately became worried about Indiana's upcoming offseason. Kevin Pritchard and the front office went from expecting to land a top-tier young talent to needing a creative touch to improve the roster.
Despite the disappointment that was the lottery, Pacers fans were given a reason to be excited about the upcoming NBA offseason.
Chad Buchanan, the team's general manager, spoke out with some positive words about the team's offseason plans. He revealed that Indiana is becoming a legitimate free agency destination that players are interested in.
“A big part of the pre-draft camp here in Chicago this week is meeting with agents and talking about interest in our team and fits with our team," Buchanan said.
"I would say this, we’re a very appealing destination with where we’re at with this group.”
Over the years, the Pacers have been anything but a free agency draw. Playing in a small market has not been a priority for players. However, Indiana is a legitimate NBA Finals contender.
Last season, the Pacers took the Oklahoma City Thunder to Game 7 in the Finals. Sadly, superstar point guard Tyrese Haliburton went down with a torn Achilles in that game, costing Indiana a potential championship and forcing him out of the 2025-26 season.
Haliburton will be returning to the court on opening night in 2026-27.
Outside of the star point guard, the Pacers have a roster ready to compete. Pascal Siakam, Andrew Nembhard, Zubac, Aaron Nesmith, T.J. McConnell, Obi Toppin, and Jarace Walker are all great pieces. If Indiana can add another impact player or two this offseason, it could win it's first NBA championship.
Things may not have gone according to plan when it comes to the draft. However, there are other ways to improve the roster.
Expect to hear plenty of rumors surrounding the Pacers this offseason. They will have a chance to add players in free agency or the trade market.
It sure sounds like they're planning to be aggressive and are firmly in win-now mode.
