The Indiana Pacers have agreed to terms on a two-year deal with Kelly Oubre Jr. and Tyrese Haliburton has reacted.
The Indiana Pacers made their first move in NBA free agency on Wednesday afternoon, reportedly agreeing to terms with Kelly Oubre Jr. on a two-year deal worth nearly $17 million.
Oubre is a quality pickup for a team that badly needed more wing scoring in its second unit. He will immediately become a key role player for the Pacers.
Shortly after the news broke that Oubre had agreed to terms with Indiana, star point guard Tyrese Haliburton took to social media to share his reaction to the news. He is clearly happy to welcome his new teammate to town.
Haliburton didn't write any words in his social media post, but he shared a photo of Oubre smiling in a Pacers workout jersey during his pre-draft workout years back.
Needless to say, Haliburton approves of the move to add bench depth to the roster.
What Will Kelly Oubre Jr. Bring to the Indiana Pacers?
Oubre has played in the NBA for 11 seasons. He was originally drafted by the Atlanta Hawks with the No. 15 overall pick in the 2015 draft, but never played a game for the franchise.
To start his career, Oubre played for the Washington Wizards. He played three and a half years there before being traded to the Phoenix Suns, where he played a year and a half. Following those stints, Oubre has spent a year with the Golden State Warriors, two years with the Charlotte Hornets, and the last three seasons with the Philadelphia 76ers.
Last season with the 76ers, the 30-year-old guard played in 50 games and made 41 starts. He averaged 14.1 points, five rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 1.4 steals per game, while shooting 46.7 percent from the floor and a career-high 36 percent from three-point range.
He is known for being more of a slasher than a shooter on the offensive end of the court. That fit will be interesting for an Indiana team that loves to shoot from the perimeter.
On the defensive side of the floor, Oubre played well last season. He should fit in nicely on the perimeter for the Pacers defensively.
At the price tag Indiana paid to get him, it's a good move. Oubre will be a key part of what the Pacers do in the 2026-27 NBA season and will help alleviate some pressure off of Haliburton and the starting lineup with his scoring ability.
