After starting the season out 2-10, the New Orleans Pelicans have fired head coach Willie Green.
The New Orleans Pelicans have made the expected decision to move on from head coach Willie Green after four full seasons and a 2-``10 start to his fifth.
The rumors had been swirling since the team started 2-``10, but the time has come now, after their fourth straight loss and in the middle of a tough home stand.
New Orleans had a 150-190 record during his tenure. Consistency was hard to find. They made the playoffs twice, but a 21-61 record last season and a 2-10 start to this one were too much to handle.
The team looked like they had completely quit on the coach. Effort was low, players were checked out and the fans were livid.
The Pelicans entered this season with high hopes. It's a more talented roster on paper than last year, the team is mostly healthy and doesn't own its first-round pick. Winning was imperative.
Now Joe Dumars will get a chance to reevaluate the team this offseason and hire his own guy, something that should have already happened.
James Borrego will run things for the rest of this year, which could be a nice chance to audition for the full-time job next year.
Borrego is a Gregg Popovich disciple and has been in the running for some other head coach openings.
His first tenure as a head coach didn't work out well with the Charlotte Hornets, but he knows this roster well and is still viewed highly among coaching circles.
Now, he gets the chance to try and revive this New Orleans season with 76 games left.
