These are some of the biggest positives to take away from the first few games of the New Orleans Pelicans' season.
The New Orleans Pelicans have had a frustrating start to the season, which has left much of the fan base down in the dumps. The thing is, though, that it hasn't been all bad. The team is competing in close games for a reason.
Trying to focus on the good, here are some players (and a tendency) that have been some of the biggest positives over the first few games:
Saddiq Bey
There are a few certainties in this world: death, taxes and Bey putting up a solid performance. He was one of the biggest bright spots last year and has continued to look great this year.
Bey has posted 15.7 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.3 assists on 50.0/43.8/83.3 shooting splits. He has come into the lineup down the stretch for Jeremiah Fears over the last two games. He was their best clutch performer last year, but still isn't really being involved late. He deserves a larger role on this team right now.
Derik Queen
Queen was actually one of the bigger worries heading into this year, given questions about his fit with what Jamahl Mosley wants to do. So far, though, he's looked great off the bench. The sophomore still isn't an enforcer on defense, but the effort is up and he's had some solid moments.
Overall, Queen is posting 13.0 points, 8.3 rebounds and 1.7 assists on 52.2/33.3/93.3 shooting splits. His offensive involvement as a playmaker has taken a dip, which is something that the team could look to increase.
Jordan Poole
This is an interesting one because the numbers don't actually look that great for him, but he has had a very positive impact on the game so far. He is a team-best +16 in total for the year despite shooting 3-of-18 from the field. Once the shots start falling, he'll be golden. The defensive effort and decision-making have looked better. He is doing a great job of getting his teammates involved with 12 assists, which is second on the team. He is pretty much the only one outside of Murray who is sharing the ball consistently.
Defense Forcing Turnovers
The defense has had its moments, but the way they have closed games has ruined a lot of the goodwill earned. Mosley needs time for the system to fully set in and find consistency, but some of what they have envisioned is showing up already. Namely, they've been active with their hands and are generating a ton of turnovers. Zion Williamson is second in the league with eight steals, and Dejounte Murray is tied for fourth with seven. The team as a whole ranks second. They are tied for 12th in blocks, but that could be questionable moving forward without Yves Missi.
