These two trios had the highest and lowest net rating changes when they were on the court for the New Orleans Pelicans last season.
The New Orleans Pelicans are pretty much running back the same roster for next season, which means that looking at what they did last year holds even more value than normal.
The only difference, really, is going to be the players being older and a new coaching staff moving them around. There is a lot of talent on this roster, but the coaching staff is going to need to find the right combination of that talent. That is something that has haunted this team for years.
One important factor will be seeing how players mesh with their teammates. Databallr allows a look at the different two-man combinations from last season and how they performed using the team's net rating change when the two are on the court together (cutting out garbage-time minutes).
Here are the best and worst three-player combinations from last year:
Best - Saddiq Bey/Herb Jones/Zion Williamson - +3.3 Net Rating
A lineup like this being solid is one of the reasons that Jamahl Mosley and the Pelicans leadership believe they can still compete this year. These are three players who could play on a playoff team, but they need to find a way to match how well they complement each other across the rest of the roster. This was the only trio listed that was a positive.
None of these three players is turnover-prone, and all three are positive in transition and are great at creating fast-break opportunities with active hands on defense. That is going to be what the new coaching staff preaches. Someone like Micah Peavy would fit in well with these three, which is why New Orleans has been trying to find another player like him.
There's not much to say other than that this makes sense. If the Pelicans want to compete next year, they're going to need these three to be on the court together or at least need to keep some combination of these types of players together.
Bey is a three-level scorer who rarely turns the ball over, Jones can shoot a little bit while playing excellent defense that creates offense and Williamson is one of the most efficient paint scorers in the league.
Worst - Trey Murphy/Derik Queen/Zion Williamson - -11.4 Net Rating
This being the worst is what is scary for New Orleans, because it's hard to imagine much of this is Murphy's fault. The Queen and Williamson minutes did not go well. Joe Dumars has said he wants to give it more time to mesh, but he'll need some growth from the players for that to happen.
This is a frontcourt that is going to be hunted on defense and is easy to shut down on offense because of the lack of spacing. Queen will need to continue to round out his game, and Williamson needs to finally move on from being a one-level scoring threat.
