The ball-handling legend God Shammgod brings his elite player development skills to the Big Easy, aiming to sharpen the backcourt finesse of rookie Jeremiah Fears and the New Orleans Pelicans' core.
With Jamahl Mosley hired as their new head coach, the New Orleans Pelicans have begun to fill out their coaching staff, and they are off to a fun start.
First reported by Michael Scotto of Hoops Hype and since confirmed by several sources, the Pelicans have added iconic basketball trainer God Shammgod as an assistant coach.
Shammgod has an extensive reputation for working with players. He did a lot of work with Luka Doncic early in his career with the Dallas Mavericks. He also worked with Kyrie Irving there, but they have worked together for a very long time. He spent seven years with the Mavericks as a player development coach before joining the Orlando Magic back in July of last year.
Under the guidance of Shammgod, the Magic saw the young Anthony Black take strides as a point guard. It's no surprise that Mosley is interested in continuing to work with the New York native.
This is obviously most exciting for the development of rookie point guard Jeremiah Fears, who showed a lot of promise in his first year. He won't turn 20 until October and he now gets one the best handles coaches in the sport to start helping with one of the few holes in his game.
Everyone will have a lot to gain, though. Trey Murphy has been working on his on-ball skills for years, Zion Williamson is already at a good spot and Derik Queen already utilizes finesse.
If the name "Shammgod" sounds familiar, it's because there is a popular basketball move named after him, as he popularized it in America. It's a version of a crossover dribble, which is extra deceptive.
