The New Orleans Pelicans have finally made another move, signing former Philadelphia 76ers forward Trendon Watford to a one-year deal on Monday morning, per ESPN's Shams Charania.
This deal is worth $2.9 million, keeping the Pelicans below the luxury tax and filling out that final roster spot ahead of training camp. There could be some more moves made, but New Orleans has a full team with the Watford signing, which does appear to be a bit more than just a workout.
Watford had been weighing options overseas before finding a new home with the Pelicans. It's actually a return to the state for Watford, who played his college ball for the LSU Tigers.
The 25-year-old averaged 6.5 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.5 assists on 51.5/20.0/77.9 shooting splits on 16.3 minutes a night. His production and minutes were inconsistent, though. There were some games, where he was given a bigger workload, and excelled.
Against the Toronto Raptors, for example, Watford was given the start and put up the following stat line: 20 points, 17 rebounds and 10 assists. That's not to say he'll put up a triple-double every time he starts, but he has the ability to impact the game if given the chance.
For New Orleans, he'll be towards the end of the rotation, but he has offensive value as someone who can at least rebound and pass. He isn't the floor spacer that many wanted to see, but this seems like a solid value pickup for the bench, which is about as good as it gets in the middle of August.
