Shams Charania highlights Trey Murphy as a top target for the Detroit Pistons. Could a massive trade package land the New Orleans Pelicans' rising star in Detroit?
The New Orleans Pelicans have a couple of decisions to make this offseason about who they want to trade and for what. There is at least one player, though, who should be prioritized for next year's roster: Trey Murphy.
Murphy has grown into a really valuable player and is just now entering his age 26 season. While they could get a haul for him in the trade market, he is a crucial piece to any sort of winning the team wants to do in the near future. Still, people will be calling for his services.
Here is what NBA insider Shams Charania had to say about the potential of the Detroit Pistons going star-shopping this offseason and what that actually means on an appearance during ESPN's Get Up:
"Look at the profile of player, right? Lauri Markkanen and Trey Murphy, like those are guys in their 20s in the prime of their career, right. You want players that fit the mold of Cade Cunningham and Jalen Duren."
This confirms that the outside NBA world officially views Murphy as a star-type player. He is being taken seriously as one of the top trade pieces in the market this offseason. That could make it hard for Joe Dumars and co. to lay off moving him.
It's already been said that they wanted a Desmond Bane-type package for Murphy. That would mean four first-round picks. Murphy would still demand at least that much, but his market could go up even further if competition piles up.
The forward averaged 21.5 points, 5.7 rebounds and 3.8 assists on 47.0/37.9/88.6 shooting splits.
