The New Orleans Pelicans are currently on a two-game win streak, sparked by the play of breakout rookies Derik Queen and Jeremiah Fears, among some other veterans.
One player that has not played in a Pelicans win this season is Zion Williamson. The franchise centerpiece is dealing with another hamstring strain with very little information surrounding it. It's a feeling that New Orleans fans are all too familiar with.
With the shining play from the younger stars, the mood around trading Williamson is at least 'receptive' right now.
It would be foolish to overreact to two close wins against mediocre teams, but a new vision for the future has started to emerge.
This also isn’t necessarily an overreaction. It’s Williamson’s seventh year and he hasn’t changed. He’s dominant in the paint and great when he plays, but he barely plays.
Now feels like the time where the Pelicans could seriously consider moving on from the headache-inducing experience they have felt in recent years.
Williamson's value is not where the team would want it to be, but that is starting to matter less and less. At some point, New Orleans just needs to do it. His value isn't increasing because he's still not on the court to increase it.
Should they start having more serious conversations about moving the former first-overall pick, here are some teams that make sense and some of their top trade assets. Again, the Pelicans won't be getting all of these assets, but just some stuff to consider:
(Publishers Note: This is not sourced information. Just a couple of teams that the author believes make sense to have conversations with, should they start happening.)
Best Assets: Jaime Jaquez Jr., Nikola Jovic, Kasparas Jakicionis, 2029 1st, 2031 1st
If Williamson needs a culture change to finally take that next step as an NBA star, there is few better places with a hard-nosed approach that has been proven to work. They are also a star short from feeling like they are really in contention.
Bam Adebayo, sneakily, has become a fantastic three-point shooting big. With his added ability to space, that opens up room for Williamson to play next to him. Add in the shooting from Tyler Herro and that would be a fun team to watch.
Best Assets: Jonathan Kuminga, Brandon Podziemski, They have their own firsts through 2030
The Steph Curry era is ending, but the Warriors are still trying their best to win during the tail ends of it. Williamson would not only give them a piece that would make Golden State better right now, but also give them another potential franchise piece to pass the torch onto.
Podziemski wants that to be him, but being realistic, he hasn't exactly looked like that player to start his career.
The Warriors and Steve Kerr are also a much bigger market that will accept nothing less than excellence from Williamson. If that's what he needs to give more effort or fix whatever has been ailing him in New Orleans, this is one of the best spots for him to land.
Best Assets: Moussa Diabate, Their own firsts from 2027-2032, 2027 DAL First (Top 2 Protected), 2027 MIA First (Lottery Protected)
The Hornets don't have the refined culture of Golden State or the Heat, but there is a factor of Williamson essentially returning home. He was born just under an hour away and played high school ball just 30 minutes further.
Pairing him with the skillset of LaMelo Ball, along with the shooting of Brandon Miller and Kon Knueppel, could open up a lot of things on the basketball court. It would also complete the young core that Charlotte has desperately been searching for.
