Everyone always says not to overreact, but where's the fun in that?
The New Orleans Pelicans have played just one game this season, a loss, but there is still a lot gleam from the first of 82 matchups this season.
It's time to have some fun and come up with some overreactions to this game. It is far too early to make any final remarks about this Pelicans roster, but these are some statements that will become true if this loss is any indication of what's to come.
Fears looked like he belonged in the NBA during his first action, which is all that one could really ask for from him. He's a rookie that is looked at as a raw talent that just turned 19 years old.
He was moving into the paint with confidence and was able to create his own shot with relative ease.
The former Oklahoma Sooners standout will need to expand his game. He needs to playmake for others and develop a shot outside of the paint, for starters, but that stuff can be taught. The intangibles look good.
With Jordan Poole and Dejounte Murray on the team, Fears will get the time that he needs to develop without having too much pressure.
It was as good of a debut as the seventh-overall pick could really have, especially off the bench. The future looks bright.
Poole started stronger than he finished, but still had a nice offensive game overall. The real takeaway with him was his shot-making ability from beyond the three-point line.
He was making some impressive shots while also getting very little help from the rest of the offense in creating open looks. That will come as on-court chemistry grows and the players learn how to play with each other.
McCollum set New Orleans' three-point record back in 2024 with 239 made in 66 games played. That's an average of 3.6 per night.
That means Poole is slightly behind pace with three makes in his first game, but everything about his approach and ability should improve as the season goes along.
He is still making them at a career-high rate. He made 235 in 68 games last year, putting him near McCollum's level.
If he stays healthy, the record should be in reach.
This one is less of an overreaction and closer to a fact. Even before Yves Missi went down, the lack of depth in the front court was on display. Kevon Looney coming back will help, but that might not be enough.
On the flip side, there is plenty of guard depth. Willie Green played 10 players in the opening game and Jose Alvarado didn't see the court. When Dejounte Murray returns, those minutes in the rotation will get even more complicated.
The Pelicans should look into trading one of those bottom of the rotation guards, like Alvarado or Jordan Hawkins, to grab a big man. Both are impactful and valuable players in their own right, but that roster spot could be better used on another option at center.
