The New Orleans Pelicans lost a long-rumored trade target on Monday as the Portland Trail Blazers sent Ja Morant to the Memphis Grizzlies.

The New Orleans Pelicans had long been rumored as the next destination for Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant, no matter how many times they denied it. Now, they can officially move past it as the Grizzlies deal Morant to the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday afternoon.

In recent days, it has become clear that Memphis wanted to rid itself of its star guard in any way possible. The deal that they got with the Trail Blazers makes that clear. The entire return is Jerami Grant and Kris Murray.

At that low of a price, the idea that the Pelicans actually should have tried to trade for Morant might come back around. All in all, though, New Orleans was probably safer staying away. Even despite what he could bring if a change of scenery helps unlock that next level of his game again.

Three years ago, Morant averaged 25.1 points, 5.6 rebounds and 8.1 assists a game. This past season, that was down to just 19.5 points, 3.3 rebounds and 8.1 assists on 41.0/23.5/89.7 shooting splits. He had games where he scored 40 and 35, but the consistency wasn't there.

The Pelicans already have a veteran guard who is a good enough fit in Dejounte Murray. Outside of swapping the two, and taking a big swing on Morant, there is no need for another guard. Plus, Jeremiah Fears is the future of the franchise and bringing in someone of that level could ruffle some feathers down the road.

There is a case to be made on both sides, but the decision has already been made. Any fans in New Orleans who want Morant will have to wait a little longer for the next chance.
