The Detroit Pistons are pushing for back-to-back wins over the Cleveland Cavs within the last week

Riding an active three-game winning streak, the Detroit Pistons are looking to double up the Cleveland Cavaliers twice within the span of one week with tip-off set for 7 pm at Rocket Arena later tonight.

Two games ago, the two squads took part in a Central Division showdown within Detroit city limits, and the Pistons escaped with a three-point overtime win over the Cavs, but the visiting squad reportedly was unconvinced with the result. According to the Cavs, who were missing both James Harden and Donovan Mitchell for Friday night’s contest, the wrong squad came out on top, so the two sides will have a chance to settle the score once again.

The Pistons are fresh off a comfortable 106-92 road win over the Orlando Magic, which gave Detroit their eighth victory in nine games, and Jalen Duren was recently named Eastern Conference Player of the Week as a result of the dominant post-All-Star Game stretch the 22-year old’s been on as of late. So, the Pistons will be taking a healthy batch of momentum into tonight’s spirited rivalry matchup.

From a wider lens, the Pistons stand at 45-14 in the regular season so far, which is good enough for an 8.5-game lead over the Cavs in the Central Division. The Pistons also hold a 2-1 edge over the Cavs in terms of the season series, so tonight's game could be a decisive blow to Cleveland in multiple senses as the last scheduled meeting between the two sides.

Cavs News

Over the last five games, Cleveland has run into a rough patch with a 2-3 record, though they’ve been far from healthy during that stretch. Both Mitchell and Harden have battled injury woes recently, but that’s provided an expanded opportunity for Jarrett Allen to showcase his offensive skillset, which he took full advantage of against the Pistons to the tune of 25 points on 10-for-12 shooting.

However, Harden is back in action now and he led the Cavs to a slim four-point win over the Brooklyn Nets with a near-triple-double performance two nights ago. Harden posted 22 points, nine rebounds and assists in Cleveland’s 106-102 victory, though he was mired by turnover struggles and coughed up the rock five times on Sunday night.

From a team perspective, the Cavs rank No. 3 in the NBA for drive field goal percentage with a 52.1% conversion rate while scoring on drives at a 45.9% clip, so defending the second level will be of pinnacle importance for the Pistons tonight. The Cavs also check in as the third-highest scoring team in the league on a per game basis, so keeping Cleveland in check by disrupting their ability to access that mid-range will be a key battle to watch on a night where Isaiah Stewart will be back patrolling the paint for Detroit.

Injury Report

For the first time in eight games, Isaiah Stewart will be available for the Pistons now that he’s served out the entirety of his suspension. Apart from Beef Stew’s return to action, the Pistons are healthy from an injury standpoint, though a series of players (Wendell Moore Jr. and Isaac Jones) are already listed as out with G-League duty, and at least one out of Chaz Lanier, Bobi Klintman or Tolu Smith will join them.

On Cleveland’s side of the arrangement, Harden is off of the injury report completely and is expected to play against the Pistons tonight, though Mitchell is not so lucky with a right groin strain holding him out of tonight’s matchup. Dean Wade is questionable to return tonight, though he’s still battling a sprained ankle right now.

Coach’s Corner With JB:

After the Pistons went down to Orlando and came back from a nine-point deficit to eventually put the finishing touches on a double-digit win, J.B. Bickerstaff was asked about the way his team performed on the road against a squad that’s still very much positioned to make the postseason.

“That’s who we are,” Bickerstaff said. “We figure out a way. Our identity is winning in the trenches, trying to create as much chaos as we possibly can and finding ways to win no matter the situation. I think that’s what our guys have done a good job is shot’s going, shot’s not going, good runs, bad runs, whatever it may be, they find a way to put together enough stops, which gets us out in transition where we’re elite and you come away with a win.”

The Pistons had one of those bad runs in the first half against the Magic where they fell into a hole early on, but Detroit battled back with some key halftime adjustments to respond with a suffocating defensive performance in the third and fourth quarters. In fact, the Pistons held the Magic to just 35 points in the second half to underpin a thoroughly rugged defensive effort from Detroit.

Cavs Player To Watch: James Harden

As an 11-time All-Star, James Harden should command the Pistons’ defensive attention tonight without Mitchell in the lineup tonight. Even as a 36-year old, Harden can still score and make plays at an elite level even though he’s operated mainly as a facilitator and pick and roll expert for the Cavs since joining their squad.

Naturally, Allen has benefited from that connection at the top of the key the most, but Harden is able to redirect his effort in other areas now that he’s not looking to score at such a high volume every game. Against the Nets, Harden filled the stat sheet with 22 points, nine rebounds and eight assists, so the veteran creator might see a healthy dose of Ausar Thompson’s defensive tenacity when the Pistons take the court in Cleveland.
