After taking down the Oklahoma City Thunder and Cleveland Cavaliers in back-to-back games, the Detroit Pistons are refocusing their sights on an ambitious Orlando Magic squad. This will be the Pistons’ first game away from the friendly confines of Little Caesars Arena since taking on the Chicago Bulls just over a week ago, but Detroit has generally taken care of business in between.
Facing the Cavs two nights ago, the Pistons took a dangerous Cavs squad to the absolute brink on Friday night, but Detroit was able to squeak by with a three-point win in overtime, 122-119. In the contest, Pistons All-Star center Jalen Duren continued his rampant stretch of production over the last four games with another massive double-double, totalling 33 points and 16 rebounds when time expired.
Towards the end of the fourth quarter, Cade Cunningham fouled out while protecting the Detroit basket with about two minutes left in regulation, so JD had to lead the Pistons to victory in extra time without his All-Star partner’s expert guidance. But Duren’s six points in OT helped give the Pistons the boost they needed to improve to 44-14 on the year.
As for Detroit’s opponent, the Magic have compiled a 3-2 record over their last five games, which is nothing to scoff at considering it includes wins over the Los Angeles Lakers and the Clippers alike. However, the Magic took their last game on the chin as Kevin Durant’s 40-point outburst was enough to sink Orlando’s hopes at entering tonight’s matchup on a three-game winning streak. Instead, the Magic fell to the Rockets by a 113-108 margin.
Despite the loss, Desmond Bane put up 30 points in an efficient 12-for-19 manner, but he finished as the only Magic player to exceed 20 points and just one of four players to break double-digits at all. So, the Magic struggled to keep up on a night where KD was in rhythm from the jump.
From a team standpoint, the Magic are currently in 7th place in the Eastern Conference at 31-27 on the season. At home, however, the Magic are considerably more dangerous with a 17-10 mark to their credit, so the Pistons will aim to stunt an Orlando team with the third most clutch wins in the league this season while also scoring the 5th most drive points in the NBA on a per game basis.
For the Pistons, Isaiah Stewart is the only notable absence at the moment as Beef Stew serves the final leg of his seven-game suspension. From a defensive perspective, the Pistons have missed Stewart’s interior presence, so Detroit will welcome Beef Stew back into the rotation with open arms soon enough.
As for the Magic, forward Franz Wagner is the most significant health-related issue heading into tonight’s contest. The fifth-year Michigan product is still dealing with lingering effects from a fairly serious high ankle sprain, and that’s the type of injury that can suddenly flare back up with one wrong step, so the Magic are approaching his rehab with a touch of caution.
In their recent Central Division showdown against the Cavs, the Pistons’ ability to persevere through a trailing position to just force overtime after Cunningham fouled out was impressive enough. But in the extra frame, Detroit was able to continue applying pressure even without their floor general, and J.B. Bickerstaff attributed that performance to his team’s readiness.
“It’s moment to moment, time by time, collectively, the guys rise to the occasion,” Bickerstaff said. “You lose Cade, obviously that hurts. You lose Duncan, that hurts. But like we keep saying, we’re deep and we trust the guys we have on the floor that they can go out and make plays, and that’s what they did that again tonight.”
The Pistons added another clutch win to their resume, which pushed them further into first place in the NBA, two positions above the Magic, with 25 such victories during the 2025-26 campaign.
If the Magic do not have Franz Wagner to funnel their offense through, Paolo Banchero quickly rises to the status of Orlando’s most dangerous offensive player operating at the top of the key, though he lacks the efficiency that the team desires.
Currently, Bane has the hot hand after lighting up the Rockets recently, and when the Pistons and Magic played during the NBA Cup on Nov. 28, Bane hung 37 points on Detroit in a three-point loss for the Pistons. Given that prolific scoring night in the not too distant past, the Pistons will likely key in on Bane a little tighter this time around to help eliminate a similar shooting performance.
Apart from that outburst, the Pistons were able to hold Bane in check during the team's initial meeting back in October when he was limited to just 12 points.
Later tonight, the Pistons will look to gain an edge in the season series against Orlando after splitting a pair of Eastern Conference battles earlier this season. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 pm down in Orlando.
