The Detroit Pistons already have a couple important injuries to manage heading into tonight’s game against the Philadelphia 76ers

Heading into tonight’s game, both the Detroit Pistons (2-0) and Philadelphia 76ers (3-0) are bringing undefeated records into the Eastern Conference matchup, though they may not have full squads to work with.

In the Pistons’ Friday night contest against the Miami Heat, All-Star center Jalen Duren went down with a right hamstring injury in the first half and did not return. Not long after in the same game, Ausar Thompson hit the floor after tweaking his right ankle, so he followed JD down the tunnel and into the locker room for treatment. Similarly, AT did not return to Detroit’s 128-111 road win.

Yesterday, the Pistons announced that Duren had already been ruled out for tonight’s battle with the Sixers, but Thompson still has an opportunity to suit up against one of the most hyped squads entering the 2026-27 campaign. After LeBron James and Jaylen Brown joined Philly in the offseason, the 76ers immediately became a team draped with expectations and pressure, but they’ve managed to deal with the elevated scrutiny well thus far.

Through three games, the 76ers have stuck to their five-man core of James, Brown, Tyrese Maxey, V.J. Edgecombe and Joel Embiid for the most part with only three bench players logging serious playing time in their absence. Based on that reality, the Sixers present the same three-man or four-man challenge for almost the entire game, which gives the Pistons an advantage from a game-planning perspective since they’ll see the same sets from the same personnel grouping so often.

James sat out the Sixers’ game last night since it’s part of a back-to-back, which means the four-time NBA Champion is most assuredly set to suit up tonight versus the Pistons. Embiid, however, has a more uncertain status tonight based on comments from 76ers head coach Nick Nurse yesterday.

Against the Milwaukee Bucks, Embiid exploded for a 28-point triple-double to help secure a three-game winning streak for his team, so his status for tonight is of critical importance to Detroit, especially since Duren won’t be in the lineup for the Motor City hoops squad. In his absence, the Pistons are expected to start Paul Reed at the five since he filled in so admirably for Duren against the Heat with a 19-point, 11-rebound effort off the bench.

From a depth perspective, the Pistons will bump Tolu Smith up to the second-string position for tonight’s game, and there’s a possibility that Isaac Jones is activated to provide a bit more muscle in the low post for Detroit regardless of whether Embiid plays for Philly or not.

Tip-off is slated for 7:30 pm between the Pistons and the 76ers.
