The Detroit Pistons (1-0) took the to the road for tonight’s 8 pm matchup against the Miami Heat (0-1)
When the Detroit Pistons opened the regular season with a 121-113 win over the Boston Celtics, the Motor City squad did so in a way that was reminiscent of their 60-win campaign from a year ago.
In the second half, the Pistons sparked a 23-0 one-way charge that was built off tight defense and turnover production. Of course, Detroit needed several clutch three-pointers from Javonte Green and Duncan Robinson in order to jump back in the lead, but the Pistons relied on their defensive aptitude, which describes this team at its core.
But later tonight, the Pistons will take part in their first road game of the 2026-27 campaign against a new-look Miami Heat squad that suffered a double-digit loss in their first game with Giannis Antetokounmpo in uniform.
Now, the Heat are expected to stand as one of the tougher outs in the Eastern Conference this season, but their success does not look like it is going to come overnight. In an admittedly tough matchup against the Minnesota Timberwolves, Antetokounmpo went off for 35 points on a night where his squad still came up 25 points short. Apart from Giannis’ offensive outburst, no one else on the Heat totaled more than 15 points (Bam Adebayo), though all five Miami starters did break into double-figures.
With those season-opening experiences establishing the pre-text for tonight’s Eastern Conference matchup, the Pistons are entering tonight’s game relatively healthy. Taurean Prince is the only exception since he’s carrying a probable designation (personal reasons) after missing Detroit’s win over Boston on Tuesday afternoon. If Prince is ready to go, then the Pistons’ trio of two-way players (Elijah Harkless, Ugonna Onyenso and Isaac Jones) will sit out for tonight’s 8 pm tip-off.
Bouncing over to the Heat bench, Miami already has three health issues that they’re keeping an eye on. Second-year forward Myron Gardner posted four points in three minutes on Wednesday, but he is slated to be available despite a right ankle sprain. Heat big man Vlad Goldin is also working through a right ankle sprain after missing the Timberwolves game, though he is also expected to play tonight as well. Finally, Miami guard Dru Smith should make his return after dealing with a strained right calf as all three players are probable for the Friday night tilt.
Although one game is a small sample size, the Heat were largely outrebounded against the Timberwolves and had a rough shooting night from behind the arc, but they dominated from a scoring perspective inside the paint. Given that dynamic, the Pistons should be ready for a game that pits strength against strength as the Heat will look to control the margins of the contest through extra possessions and turnover production, which is a game script that Detroit knows all too well.
