The Detroit Pistons have a heavily anticipated rematch with the Charlotte Hornets slated for tonight after the two squads duked it out in February

In the Detroit Pistons’ penultimate contest of the 2025-26 regular season campaign, the team is locked into the first seed in the Eastern Conference with the 60-win threshold well within reach with tonight’s road game against the Charlotte Hornets on the docket.

Even though the Pistons are 15 games ahead of the Hornets at 58-22 so far, Charlotte does not play like a squad that’s double-digit games behind the conference leader. The Hornets have one of the league’s most efficient, productive five-man rotations (LaMelo Ball, Brandon Miller, Miles Bridges, Moussa Diabate and Kon Knueppel) in the NBA this season, and the entire organization has represented a pleasant surprise story of a young team with substantial upward mobility as a dangerous playoff squad.

The Pistons and Hornets have considerable history after a testy affair in February resulted in four ejections and a pair of suspensions for Detroit. During the mid-season affair, Jalen Duren found himself in an altercation with Diabate after a hard foul, and the two sparked a clash that ended with Isaiah Stewart darting off the bench to square up with Miles Bridges on the other end of the court. Duren and Stewart were smacked with two-game and seven-game suspensions respectively for their roles in the brawl, and that fracas is likely still fresh in the memory of both teams.

A victory tonight would give the Pistons a three-game sweep in the season series against the Hornets, but Detroit is carrying a slight injury concern approaching the Eastern Conference clash. After a demonstrably positive patch over the last 10 games, Kevin Huerter has finally begun to look like a dangerous rotation piece for the Pistons after joining via trade mid-season from the Chicago Bulls but the veteran is questionable to suit up tonight due to an illness. Over the last 10 games, Huerter is averaging 12.1 points off the bench while knocking down three-pointers at a 37.5% rate during the month of April, so the Pistons would like to ideally keep Red Velvet in the lineup so that he can build on his recent momentum.

Apart from that issue, the Pistons have a relatively clean bill of health after welcoming both Cade Cunningham and Isaiah Stewart back into the lineup against the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday. Since the Bucks were dealing with a plethora of injuries during a remarkably unsuccessful season, the Pistons cruised to a comfortable double-digit victory and were able to reintegrate their All-Star point guard and rim-protecting big man at their own pace.

After the lopsided win, Pistons head coach J.B. Bickerstaff said the team was going to monitor Cunningham’s health ahead of tonight’s matchup with the Hornets, but the fifth-year pro is set to play barring any let setbacks.

As for the Hornets, only guard Coby White is listed on the injury report with a groin issue according to ESPN.com, so his status for tonight’s game is still undecided. White, much like Huerter, was also acquired from the Bulls near the trade deadline in a rapid firesale from the Central Division squad, and both players are battling to play later tonight.

Tip-off between the two teams is set for 7 pm at the Spectrum Central in Charlotte. If the Pistons can win tonight’s contest and their regular season finale against the Indiana Pacers afterwards, then Detroit will reach the 60-win mark for just the third time in franchise history, so there are some stakes on the line even though the Pistons clinched the one seed several games ago.
